{"id":12872,"date":"2019-10-23T12:26:41","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T12:26:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=12872"},"modified":"2019-10-23T12:26:41","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T12:26:41","slug":"govt-deserves-praise-for-standing-up-to-us-pressure-in-pds-saga-dep-energy-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2019\/10\/23\/govt-deserves-praise-for-standing-up-to-us-pressure-in-pds-saga-dep-energy-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov&#8217;t deserves praise for standing up to US pressure in PDS saga &#8211; Dep Energy minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy Energy Minister William Owuraku Aidoo has said government deserves commendations for not caving in to \u201cpressures\u201d from the US government in the PDS saga.<\/p>\n<p>The US government had given Ghana a deadline to sign an agreement with an electricity distribution company, Power Distributions Services (PDS).<\/p>\n<p>But even before the October 31<sup>st<\/sup> deadline, government announced it had terminated its concession agreement with PDS following its failure to prove its financial capacity to manage ECG.<\/p>\n<p>The US government after expressing regret at government\u2019s \u201cunwarranted\u201d decision has said Ghana is set to lose out on $190 million as part of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact with the government.<\/p>\n<p>The money is part of US support to help Ghana resolve debt-ridden energy sector which from time to time triggers power-cuts.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy Energy minister said at a press conference Wednesday, the PDS deal was not in the interest of the Ghanaian people.<\/p>\n<p>The Akufo-Addo government, he said took \u201ca very bold step without capitulating to the pressures of a very big friend like the US.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time, the Akufo-Addo government has stood its ground against the United States, William Owuraku Aidoo said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"in-article-2\"><\/div>\n<p>He said the US government has applied some sanctions against Ghana following the government\u2019s refusal to accept the deportation of some Ghanaians living there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US has not given visas to some government officials,\u201d he said and added, \u201cwe have paid the price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Minister said that refusal was the right thing to do and called for the government to be commended.<\/p>\n<p>President Akufo-Addo takes his oath of office to protect Ghana\u2019s interest seriously, he said.<\/p>\n<p>source:myjoyonline<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy Energy Minister William Owuraku Aidoo has said government deserves commendations for not caving in to \u201cpressures\u201d from the US government in the PDS saga.
