Lawyer and Professor of Accounting, Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare, has launched a \u2018Vote No\u2019 campaign ahead of the upcoming referendum.<\/p>\n
He argues that the introduction of partisanship into Ghana\u2019s local governance system is a recipe for disaster.<\/p>\n
Prof Asare\u2019s argument is not different from those of civil society groups and the opposition National Democratic Congress who believe voting \u2018Yes\u2019 would politicise the local governance system against the entrenched clause \u2013 Article 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution.<\/p>\n
However, the \u2018Yes\u2019 proponents, led by the governing New Patriotic Party, believe it will cure the winner-takes-all canker and promote development at the local level.<\/p>\n
In spite of these arguments, Prof Asare maintained that, a \u2018Yes\u2019 vote in the referendum will have dire consequences including increase in \u201ccronyism and nepotism.\u201d<\/p>\n
He stressed that the people at the local level want real solutions and improvements on their social amenities.<\/p>\n
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM\u2019s Enkosii Sen show, Prof. Asare said: \u201cIf I\u2019m the president, I will not spend the money on partisanship, I will spend money on streamlining the district assemblies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prof Asare added that, should the \u2018Yes\u2019 win, the divisive tendencies of partisan politics will be transferred to the local level.<\/p>\n
