Lewis Hamilton was officially crowned the 2019 F1 world champion after finally being handed the Drivers’ Championship trophy at a star-studded awards gala.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old racer became just the second driver in the sport’s history to win six titles – and needs just one more to match all-time great Michael Schumacher’s record.<\/p>\n

Hamilton’s achievement was celebrated a week after the British superstar had rounded off this year’s campaign by clinching victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

Lewis Hamilton has officially been crowned the 2019 F1 champion at an awards gala on Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

And after impressing throughout yet another stunning season behind the wheel for Mercedes, Hamilton labelled his achievements on and off the track as ‘the best’ of his career.<\/p>\n

He said: ‘It has been the best year I would say of my career I am really proud of what we have achieved as a team.<\/p>\n

‘The season as a whole was as strong as the last I can remember. More so from the outside, just being happier.<\/p>\n

‘Happier in collaboration with the team, in terms of team work, the doors that I have opened in terms of doing fashion that I have been well received and accepted.’<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old British racer sealed his sixth world title and is now one short of the record<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen were also awarded trophies after the duo finished second and third in the rankings respectively.<\/p>\n

Mercedes also made history of their own after stringing together six consecutive championship triumphs.<\/p>\n

And since joining the prestigious constructor in 2013, Hamilton has missed out on just two titles.<\/p>\n

The reigning champion will now have to decide whether to remain with Mercedes, with Hamilton’s contract currently set to expire after next season, and rumours are already circulating of a potential switch to Ferrari.<\/p>\n
