{"id":17571,"date":"2019-12-21T15:59:45","date_gmt":"2019-12-21T15:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=17571"},"modified":"2019-12-21T15:59:45","modified_gmt":"2019-12-21T15:59:45","slug":"lawyer-backs-justice-akuffo-on-maintaining-high-standards-at-the-bar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2019\/12\/21\/lawyer-backs-justice-akuffo-on-maintaining-high-standards-at-the-bar\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawyer backs Justice Akuffo on maintaining high standards at the bar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p>Private legal practitioner, Dr Justice Yankson, has backed Justice Sophia Akuffo\u2019s firm stance on the need to maintain high standards at the bar.<\/p>\n<p>Sophia Akuffo\u2019s tenure as Chief Justice ended on Friday, December 20, 2019, after two years in office and was fraught with controversies about what critics say is her unprogressive and conservative stance on legal education.<\/p>\n<p>But taking a marked diversion from the predominant view among legal practitioners that the former Chief Justice\u2019s stance on legal education was unprogressive, Dr Yankson, who is also a medical doctor, said the calibre of the\u00a0teachers at the many law schools springing up is questionable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a people, sometimes we also gloss over certain things. We also need to interrogate the foundations of the structures we are trying to put in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly we have a lot of faculties springing up because everybody has a right to legal education, no problem. But that does not also mean that the standards aspects should also be compromised.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CWuxAtdSxAA\" width=\"650\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo to the faculties and ask the calibre of people who are teaching\u2026sometimes some of these smaller institutions that have come up, a lawyer with practically no experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome are teaching because perhaps they have just completed an LLB.
