Commercial transport operators have rejected government\u2019s decision to reduce fuel prices by \u00a20.15, saying the amount is woefully inadequate.<\/p>\n
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana and other transport unions say they are disappointed.<\/p>\n
According to them, they would have been better off if government had not absorbed anything.<\/p>\n
In an interview with JoyNews after the Finance Minister announced the reduction, the Spokesperson for GPRTU, Imoro Abass, indicated that the drivers would be discussing a further increase in transport fares.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf this is all they can do for us, I will say we are ungrateful. The \u00a20.15 is woefully inadequate, so we\u2019d have to meet and decide on which way we are going to move,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, March 24, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, announced that effective April 1, petroleum price build-up margins will be reduced by \u00a20.15 per litre.<\/p>\n
BOST margin will be reduced by \u00a20.2, Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund by \u00a20.9, Fuel Marking Margin by \u00a20.1 and Primary Distribution Margin by \u00a20.3, all per litre.<\/p>\n
According to him, the reduction aims to mitigate \u201cthe impact of the rising price of petroleum products at the pump, for the next three months.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn 2022, we exported $3,947.70 million, of which Ghana\u2019s portion was $513 million. However, we imported $2,719.00 of crude oil and finished products. The purported windfall gain in foreign exchange is a mirage.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom January to date, the average ex-pump price of diesel and petrol have increased by 57% and 45% respectively,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
But the transport operators say the reductions are not welcomed.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, the Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, David Agboado, recounted that \u201cthe last time we increased transport fares, fuel was sold at \u00a27.99, as it stands, it is \u00a210. 90, and the best intervention government could come up with was to absorb only \u00a20.15.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would have been better off if government hadn\u2019t touched it at all,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
