A team of scientists spotted evidence of relatively recent ice volcanoes on Pluto, advancing our understanding of the dwarf planet&#8217;s surface-sculpting activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakableTextP2\">NASA&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"link\">New Horizons<\/span>\u00a0mission sent back some fantastic views of Pluto during a 2015 flyby. The\u00a0<span class=\"link\">spacecraft&#8217;s data suggested the presence of cryovolcanism<\/span>\u00a0(an icy version of our familiar hot Earth volcanism).<\/p>\n<p>NASA had eyed a suspected Mauna Loa-size\u00a0<span class=\"link\">cryovolcano on Pluto called Wright Mons<\/span>, saying &#8220;it would be the largest such feature discovered in the outer solar system&#8221; if confirmed. A\u00a0study published in the journal Nature Communications\u00a0on Tuesday suggests NASA&#8217;s hunch was right. Planetary scientist\u00a0Kelsi Singer\u00a0of the\u00a0Southwest Research Institute\u00a0is lead author of the study.<\/p>\n<p>Pluto&#8217;s ice volcanoes are impressive, with some reaching 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) in height. They&#8217;re found in an area with few impact craters, hinting the volcanoes spewed out slush that reshaped the surface relatively recently in the dwarf planet&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-medium pull-right hasCaption shortcode\">\n<div class=\"originalImage modal\" data-open=\"modal\" data-target=\"#1529582c-e33a-467b-a947-5b8303fba861\" data-component=\"modalEnlargeImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/a\/img\/resize\/e7556b83b522650f639584445f8fc03720916fc9\/2022\/03\/29\/1529582c-e33a-467b-a947-5b8303fba861\/plutocryoregion.jpg?auto=webp&amp;width=644\" alt=\"plutocryoregion\" width=\"644\" height=\"0\" \/><\/div><figcaption>This perspective view uses New Horizons imagery to show what Pluto&#8217;s icy volcanic region looks like.<span class=\"credit\">NASA\/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory\/Southwest Research Institute\/Isaac Herrera\/Kelsi Singer<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For ice volcanoes to work, they must have a heat source. &#8220;The existence of these massive features suggests Pluto&#8217;s interior structure and evolution allows for either enhanced retention of heat or more heat overall than was anticipated before New Horizons, which permitted mobilization of water-ice-rich materials late in Pluto&#8217;s history,&#8221; the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The team released a perspective view of the cryovolcanic region that gives us a good idea of what the area would look like if we were to send a camera down to get a bird&#8217;s eye view.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have seen evidence of cryovolcanism in other parts of the solar system, notably on\u00a0<span class=\"link\">dwarf planet Ceres<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span class=\"link\">Saturn&#8217;s moon Titan<\/span>.
