{"id":20156,"date":"2022-04-13T05:16:56","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T05:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=20156"},"modified":"2022-04-13T05:16:56","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T05:16:56","slug":"biden-russia-war-a-genocide-trying-to-wipe-out-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/04\/13\/biden-russia-war-a-genocide-trying-to-wipe-out-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden: Russia war a \u2018Genocide\u2019 trying to wipe out Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden said Russia<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s war in Ukraine amounted to <span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--opening-double\">\u201c<\/span>genocide,\u201d accusing President Vladimir Putin of trying to \u201cwipe out the idea of even being a Ukrainian.<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--closing-double\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I called it genocide,<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--closing-double\">\u201d<\/span> he told reporters in Iowa on Tuesday shortly before boarding Air Force One to return to Washington. \u201cIt\u2019s become clearer and clearer that Putin is just trying to wipe out the idea of even being a Ukrainian.<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--closing-double\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At an earlier event in Menlo, Iowa, addressing spiking energy prices resulting from the war, Biden had implied that he thought Putin was carrying out genocide against Ukraine, but offered no details. Neither he nor his administration announced new consequences for Russia or assistance to Ukraine following Biden<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s public assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Biden<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s comments drew praise from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had encouraged Western leaders to use the term to describe Russia<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s invasion of his country.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cTrue words of a true leader @POTUS,<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--closing-double\">\u201d<\/span> he tweeted. <span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--opening-double\">\u201c<\/span>Calling things by their names is essential to stand up to evil. We are grateful for US assistance provided so far and we urgently need more heavy weapons to prevent further Russian atrocities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A United Nations treaty, to which the U.S. is a party, defines genocide as actions taken with the \u201cintent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Past American leaders often have dodged formally declaring bloody campaigns such as Russia\u2019s in Ukraine as genocide, hesitating to trigger an obligation that under international convention requires signing countries to intervene once genocide is formally identified. That obligation was seen as blocking President Bill Clinton from declaring Rwandan Hutus\u2019 killing of 800,000 ethnic Tutsis in 1994 as genocide, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Biden said it would be up to lawyers to decide if Russia<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s conduct met the international standard for genocide, as Ukrainian officials have claimed, but said \u201cit sure seems that way to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore evidence is coming out literally of the horrible things that the Russians have done in Ukraine, and we\u2019re only going to learn more and more about the devastation and let the lawyers decide internationally whether or not it qualifies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Just last week Biden had he did not believe Russia<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s actions amounted to genocide, just that they constituted \u201cwar crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a trip to Europe last month, Biden faced controversy for a nine<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>word statement seemingly supporting regime change in Moscow, which would have represented a dramatic shift toward direct confrontation with another nuclear<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>armed country. \u201cFor God\u2019s sake, this man cannot remain in power,<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--closing-double\">\u201d<\/span> Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>He clarified the comments days later, saying: \u201cI was expressing the moral outrage that I felt toward this man.
