{"id":21702,"date":"2022-05-14T07:24:45","date_gmt":"2022-05-14T07:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=21702"},"modified":"2022-05-14T07:24:45","modified_gmt":"2022-05-14T07:24:45","slug":"india-27-people-killed-after-fire-rips-through-delhi-office-block","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/05\/14\/india-27-people-killed-after-fire-rips-through-delhi-office-block\/","title":{"rendered":"India: 27 people killed after fire rips through Delhi office block"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">At least 27 people have died and dozens more were injured in a huge fire in a commercial building in India\u2019s capital,\u00a0Delhi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The large fire broke out at the four-storey building near a railway station in the western suburb of Mundka in the late afternoon on Friday, but its cause was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sign-in-gate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Television footage showed smoke billowing out of the windows of the building, with firefighters helping those trapped in the upper floors to escape as hundreds watched. More than 30 fire trucks were at the scene, along with ambulances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cTwenty-seven charred bodies were recovered from the building and almost two dozen injured are undergoing treatment,\u201d said Satpal Bharadwaj, who was in charge of operations for the Delhi fire service at the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The fire broke out in the first floor of the building that houses the office of a surveillance camera manufacturing company, police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">On Saturday, police said they\u2019d arrested two owners of the company. The police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and a criminal conspiracy that is punishable with life imprisonment or 10 years in jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The building had no clearance from the fire department and it was not equipped with fire safety equipment like extinguishers, said Atul Garg, the director of the Delhi fire service.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"3df053f1-4698-43d2-bcc1-44a5c728606f\" class=\" dcr-10khgmf\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.TweetBlockElement\">\n<div id=\"tweet-container-3df053f1-4698-43d2-bcc1-44a5c728606f\" class=\"dcr-ard5ae\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Bharadwaj said there were about 70 people in the building when the blaze erupted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cThere was no fire exit and most of the people died due to asphyxiation,\u201d Bharadwaj said, adding that more would be known after autopsies could be conducted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The deputy chief fire officer, Sunil Choudhary, said the number of injured stood at \u201cmore than 25 people\u201d. We are not sure about their safety or whereabouts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Fires are common in\u00a0India due to poor building practices, overcrowding and a lack of adherence to safety regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The Indian capital of 20 million people is currently suffering through a heatwave, with temperatures of up to 46C recorded in some places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The prime minister, Narendra Modi, offered condolences on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cExtremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a tragic fire in Delhi. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery,\u201d Modi said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, tweeted: \u201cShocked and pained to know abt this tragic incident. I am constantly in touch [with] officers.
