{"id":21997,"date":"2022-05-18T05:33:35","date_gmt":"2022-05-18T05:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=21997"},"modified":"2026-07-05T17:43:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T17:43:55","slug":"nigerias-treasury-chief-arrested-over-multimillion-dollar-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/05\/18\/nigerias-treasury-chief-arrested-over-multimillion-dollar-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria\u2019s treasury chief arrested over multimillion-dollar fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg--all-content css-1ck9wyi\">\n<p>The head of Nigeria\u2019s treasury has been arrested for alleged involvement in fraud and money laundering worth 80 billion naira ($190m), the country\u2019s anti-graft agency said.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Idris, Nigeria\u2019s accountant-general, was arrested on Monday \u201cafter failing to honour invitations\u201d to respond to the allegations, the\u00a0Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"td-a-rec td-a-rec-id-content_inlineright  tdi_2 td_block_template_5\"><\/div>\n<p>The EFCC said Idris \u201craked off the funds through bogus consultancies and other illegal activities using proxies, family members and close associates\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The proceeds were invested by Idris in real estate in the capital Abuja and in his home state of Kano in northern Nigeria, it said in a statement issued late Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Idris has not commented on the accusations.<\/p>\n<p>President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in 2015 on a pledge to end endemic graft, but has barely made a dent in corruption on a national scale.<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"1\">Under his watch, the EFCC has secured a string of high-profile convictions, including ministers, state governors, senior public servants and prominent political figures.<\/p>\n<p>But last week, the president\u00a0announced a pardon\u00a0for two ex-governors jailed for corruption, despite public outcry.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the agency said it had recovered 714 million euros ($750m) that had been plundered from the nation\u2019s coffers.<\/p>\n<p>The government has been accused of targeting the opposition in its anti-corruption drive, an allegation it denies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Al Jazeera<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The head of Nigeria\u2019s treasury has been arrested for alleged involvement in fraud and money laundering worth 80 billion naira ($190m), the country\u2019s anti-graft agency said.
