Volodymyr Zelensky asked for Ukraine to be permitted accession \u201cimmediately\u201d just days after Russia launched its invasion. He suggested this could be done \u201cvia a new special procedure\u201d, noting: \u201cOur goal is to be together with all Europeans and, most importantly, to be on an equal footing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vision, the President added, was both \u201cfair\u201d and \u201cpossible\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But Olaf Scholz has made it clear he disagrees, at least with the latter.<\/p>\n

Ukraine cannot, he said, expect to join the EU within a matter of months or even years.<\/p>\n

The German Chancellor was echoing the words of Emmanuel Macron, who earlier this month stressed accession could take decades.<\/p>\n

He told the EU Parliament: \u201cWe all know perfectly well that the process to allow [Ukraine] to join would take several years indeed, probably several decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the truth, unless we decide to lower the standards for accession. And rethink the unity of our Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The option proposed by Mr Zelensky, for Ukraine to be allowed a fast-tracked entry, does not appears to have been dismissed.<\/p>\n

Instead, the bloc has signalled it would prefer to focus on offering immediate support for Ukraine.<\/p>\n

This in itself is no small task, given the damage that has already been inflicted on the country.<\/div>\n

Mr Scholz highlighted: \u201cRebuilding destroyed infrastructure and revitalising the Ukrainian economy will cost billions.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWe as the EU must start laying the ground for a solidarity fund financed by contributions from the EU and its partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Macron also noted support could be given to Ukraine through the establishment of a \u201cparallel European community\u201d.<\/div>\n

The G7 is also set today, on May 19, to discuss funding for Ukraine.<\/p>\n

An official told Reuters that the topic of the war, and of rebuilding the battered nation, was \u201covershadowing\u201d the groups meetings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But they added that \u201cthere are other issues that must be discussed\u201d, too, including international taxation and global health.<\/p>\n
