{"id":22110,"date":"2022-05-19T15:26:33","date_gmt":"2022-05-19T15:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=22110"},"modified":"2026-07-05T17:43:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T17:43:55","slug":"jordan-kong-places-erratic-half-brother-under-house-arrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/05\/19\/jordan-kong-places-erratic-half-brother-under-house-arrest\/","title":{"rendered":"Jordan king places \u201cerratic \u201d half-brother under house arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jordan<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s king has gone public with a royal rift with his half<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>brother and formalized the former crown prince<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s house arrest, calling him \u201cerratic\u201d in an unprecedented harshly worded letter published Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>King Abdullah II said in the letter that he had approved measures to detain Prince Hamzah in his palace and restrict his communications and movements, citing his half brother\u2019s \u201cerratic behavior and aspirations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will provide Hamzah with all that he requires to live a comfortable life, but he will not have the space he once abused to offend the nation, its institutions, and his family, nor to undermine Jordan\u2019s stability,\u201d the king said.<\/p>\n<p>King Abdullah had tried to keep the rift within the family, in part to protect the Hashemite Royal family brand. His harshly worded public condemnation of his half<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>brother is a potentially risky move. Hamzah has enjoyed considerable popularity, particularly among the Jordanian tribes, traditionally a bedrock of support for the monarchy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder\"><\/div>\n<p>Abdullah and Hamzah are sons of King Hussein, who ruled Jordan for nearly a half<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>century before his death in 1999. Abdullah had appointed Hamzah as crown prince upon his succession but stripped him of the title in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>The monarch had placed Hamzah under house arrest in April 2021 for his alleged plot to destabilize the Western<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>allied kingdom. Abdullah had accused his brother of sedition but said the matter was being resolved within the family, with Hamzah remaining in his palace under the king<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--apostrophe\">\u2019<\/span>s protection.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Hamzah apologized to the king, according to a letter released by the Royal Court, saying that he hoped that \u201cwe can turn the page on this chapter in our country\u2019s and our family\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But last month, the outspoken Hamzah formally relinquished his princely title and protested on Twitter, writing that his convictions could not be reconciled with the \u201ccurrent approaches, policies and methods of our institutions<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--closing-double\">\u201d<\/span> in an oblique criticism of the king.<\/p>\n<p>In Thursday\u2019s letter, King Abdullah lashed out at his half<span class=\"typographizer-debug typographizer-debug--ignored\">&#8211;<\/span>brother, saying he would \u201cnever allow our country to be held hostage to the whims of someone who has done nothing to serve his country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a close Western ally and has long been seen as a stable Arab monarchy in a turbulent region.<\/p>\n<p>AP<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jordan\u2019s king has gone public with a royal rift with his half&#8211;brother and formalized the former crown prince\u2019s house arrest, calling him \u201cerratic\u201d in an unprecedented harshly worded letter published Thursday.
