Canada says it will ban\u00a0Huawei\u00a0and ZTE from the country\u2019s 5G network, a move that puts it in line with intelligence-sharing allies, but risks further chilling relations with China.<\/p>\n

The federal government made the announcement on Thursday afternoon after signalling for months it intended to block China\u2019s flagship telecommunications companies from accessing 5G networks in\u00a0Canada.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll take any actions necessary to safeguard our telecommunications infrastructure,\u201d said the innovation minister, Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne.\u00a0Telecoms<\/a>\u00a0providers who already have equipment from the firms must remove it \u2013 and Champagne said there would be no compensation provided by the federal government. Canadian telecom companies have spent nearly had C$700m (US$546m) on Huawei equipment over the years, largely on 4G or LTE equipment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re disappointed but not surprised. We\u2019re surprised it took the government so long to make a decision,\u201d\u00a0Huawei\u00a0spokesman Alykhan Velshi said. \u201cWe see this as a political decision, one born of political pressure primarily from the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rest of the Five Eyes network \u2013 the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand \u2013 have already banned Huawei equipment.<\/p>\n

The public safety minister, Marco Mendicino, called the move a \u201cnecessary step\u201d amid growing scepticism of Beijing\u2019s trustworthiness.<\/p>\n

For years, Canada has faced growing pressure from allies, most notably the United States, to ban Huawei\u2019s 5G equipment over fears it could compromise national security.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Canada said it would review any possible concerns posed by adopting the technology.<\/p>\n

But any decision was delayed after Huawei\u2019s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, was arrested in Canada on a US warrant. In a move widely seen as retaliatory, China arrested two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, later charging the men with espionage.\u00a0The long-running dispute came to an end after a British Columbia court ordered Meng released.\u00a0China freed the two Canadians hours later.<\/p>\n

As the standoff dragged on, relations between the two countries soured. While\u00a0China\u00a0recently lifted a ban on Canadian canola imports which had last for years, a sign of thawing relations, it is unclear how Thursday\u2019s decision will affect ties between the two nations.
