{"id":22277,"date":"2022-05-23T09:02:37","date_gmt":"2022-05-23T09:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=22277"},"modified":"2026-07-05T17:17:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T17:17:49","slug":"govt-has-spent-gh%c2%a2450m-so-far-in-addressing-flooding-asenso-boakye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/05\/23\/govt-has-spent-gh%c2%a2450m-so-far-in-addressing-flooding-asenso-boakye\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t has spent GH\u00a2450M so far in addressing flooding \u2013 Asenso-Boakye"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government says it has spent GH\u00a2 450 million towards addressing flooding in the country in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye made this known while touring some flood-prone areas in Accra following floods from Saturday night\u2019s downpour.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Accra Region in particular has over the years witnessed flooding anytime there is a downpour.<\/p>\n<p>The situation has often been attributed to poor drainage systems and other human factors, including disposal of waste materials into drains.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_ad jeg_ad_article jnews_content_inline_2_ads  \">\n<div class=\"ads-wrapper align-center \">\n<div class=\"ads_code\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But according to Asenso-Boakye, the central government is doing its part to address the problem and requires that other stakeholders including local authorities and citizens also play their part.<\/p>\n<p>While giving assurances that the perennial flooding problem is being dealt with, he said local authorities must be bold to take decisive action on buildings sited at unauthorized places.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve done is to provide some remedial measures, and that is to mitigate the effects of the huge running water. In the last five years, the government has spent GH\u00a2450 million to invest in the expansion of the drains including digging deep and concrete lining and that is to increase the drain capacity to carry more stormwater\u2026 There are some causes of flooding; indiscriminate dumping of solid waste in our drains and the haphazard development of our communities [which must be checked]. Those buildings in ubauthorized places should be removed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"google-auto-placed ap_container\"><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Asenso-Boakye further expressed confidence that the Greater Accra Resilience Integrated Development (GARID) Project, under which the government has secured a $200 million funding will help address the flooding problem.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the funds will help the government to among other things widen and deepen storm drains in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment secured a funding of $200 million funding to implement some interventions within the Odaw basin\u2026 We are about to start the construction under the project, which is an inter-ministerial project.
