{"id":22654,"date":"2022-05-29T17:23:59","date_gmt":"2022-05-29T17:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=22654"},"modified":"2022-05-29T17:23:59","modified_gmt":"2022-05-29T17:23:59","slug":"pope-francis-appoints-wa-bishop-as-cardinal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/05\/29\/pope-francis-appoints-wa-bishop-as-cardinal\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Francis appoints Wa Bishop as Cardinal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bishop Richard Kuuia Baawobr of the Wa Catholic Diocese has been appointed a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p>He is among 21 other new cardinals named by Pope Francis who will take up post at the Vatican in August; 16 of whom are under 80 years old and thus eligible to enter a conclave to elect his successor after his death or resignation.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Baawobr, a member of the Society of the Missionaries of Africa, is known in Ghana and beyond for many acts of charity, key among them, his love for people suffering from mental challenges and who have been neglected by their families.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the year that the Holy Father appointed him Bishop, volunteers at the Bishop\u2019s project that takes care of people with mental illnesses started going on the streets looking for patients and providing them with care.<\/p>\n<p>The project that involves parishes, faith-based organizations, religious women and men also brought on board doctors and nurses who started providing free medication.<\/p>\n<div id=\"in-article\"><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fides.org\/en\/news\/64582-AFRICA_GHANA_The_project_of_the_Bishop_of_Wa_continues_also_a_talk_show_to_educate_on_mental_health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bishop reportedly started using media platforms<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to create awareness about mental illnesses in a country where stigmatization of people with such challenges is high.<\/p>\n<p>Born on June 21, 1959 in Tom-Zendagangn, Ko in the Nandon District of Ghana\u2019s Wa Diocese, he had his Primary education at Tom-Zendagangn from 1965 to 1972 and continued at the St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary in Wa from 1971 to 1977.<\/p>\n<p>He had his Secondary Education at the Nandom Secondary School.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, he went to St. Victor\u2019s Major Seminary at Tamale as a Diocesan Seminarian.<\/p>\n<div id=\"in-article1\"><\/div>\n<p>Feeling God\u2019s call to be a Missionary, he joined the Society of Missionaries of Africa (M.Afr.) in 1981 after his Philosophical Studies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bishop Richard Kuuia Baawobr of the Wa Catholic Diocese has been appointed a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.
