{"id":23334,"date":"2022-06-12T12:36:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-12T12:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=23334"},"modified":"2022-06-12T12:36:44","modified_gmt":"2022-06-12T12:36:44","slug":"ukraines-teen-drone-hero-happy-that-we-destroyed-someone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/06\/12\/ukraines-teen-drone-hero-happy-that-we-destroyed-someone\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine\u2019s teen drone hero \u201chappy that we destroyed someone\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">As Russian tanks and trucks rumbled close to their village, a Ukrainian teenager and his father stealthily launched their small drone into the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">Working as a team, they took bird\u2019s-eye photos of the armored column\u00a0moving toward Kyiv\u00a0and pinpointed its coordinates, swiftly messaging the precious information to the Ukrainian military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">Within minutes, artillery batteries rained shells down on the invading forces, with deadly effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">Andriy Pokrasa, 15, and his dad, Stanislav, are being hailed in Ukraine for their volunteer aerial reconnaissance work in the early days of the invasion, when Russian troops barreling in from the north made\u00a0an ultimately failed attempt\u00a0to take the capital and bring the country to its knees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">For a full week after the Feb. 24 invasion, the pair made repeated sorties with their drone \u2014 risking capture or worse had Russian troops been aware of their snooping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">\u201cThese were some of the scariest moments of my life,\u201d Andriy recounted as he demonstrated his piloting skills for an Associated Press team of journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">\u201cWe provided the photos and the location to the armed forces,\u201d he said. \u201cThey narrowed down the coordinates more accurately and transmitted them by walkie-talkie, so as to adjust the artillery.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-hubPeekEmbed-0-2-323 HubPeek noBorderBottom-0-2-113 compressedEmbed-0-2-114\">\n<div class=\"hubPeekContainerWide-0-2-612\" data-key=\"feed-card-hub-peak\">\n<div class=\"columnLayout-0-2-618\">\n<div class=\"titleContainer-0-2-133\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"titleContainer-0-2-133\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">His father was happy to leave the piloting to the boy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">\u201cI can operate the drone, but my son does it much better. We immediately decided he would do it,\u201d Stanislav Pokrasa, 41, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">They aren\u2019t sure how many Russian targets were destroyed using information they provided. But they saw the devastation wrought on the Russian convoy when they later flew the drone back over the charred hulks of trucks and tanks near a town west of Kyiv and off a strategically important highway that leads to the capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">\u201cThere were more than 20 Russian military vehicles destroyed, among them fuel trucks and tanks,\u201d the father said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">As Russian and Ukrainian forces battled furiously for control of Kyiv\u2019s outskirts, Ukrainian soldiers finally urged the Pokrasa family to leave their village, which Russian troops subsequently occupied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">With all adult men up to age 60 under government orders to stay in the country, the elder Pokrasa couldn\u2019t join his wife and son when they fled to neighboring Poland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">They came back a few weeks ago, when Andriy had finished his school year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-325 Component-p-0-2-315\">\u201cI was happy that we destroyed someone,\u201d he said. \u201cI was happy that I contributed, that I was able to do something.
