{"id":23359,"date":"2022-06-13T07:54:57","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T07:54:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=23359"},"modified":"2026-07-05T17:19:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T17:19:01","slug":"brazil-items-belonging-to-dom-phillips-and-bruno-pereira-found-in-amazon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/06\/13\/brazil-items-belonging-to-dom-phillips-and-bruno-pereira-found-in-amazon\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil: Items belonging to Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira found in Amazon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Personal items belonging to the British journalist\u00a0Dom Phillips\u00a0and Brazilian Indigenous expert\u00a0Bruno Pereira\u00a0have been found in an area of flooded forest near the Amazonian river on which they were last seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The objects were discovered on Saturday thanks to a\u00a0small but determined Indigenous search team that has spent the past seven days on the frontline of the hunt\u00a0for the two missing men who had both, in different ways, championed the Indigenous cause.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sign-in-gate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">On Saturday morning a handful of volunteer searchers from the Matis Indigenous group came across what they suspected could be items belonging to the missing men.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"1f348d64-5879-4069-b288-5a23c991d564\" class=\"element element-interactive element--inline element-inline css-1mq3w6b\" data-alt=\".\" data-cypress=\"interactive-element-.\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">One Matis volunteer said they had decided to enter the secluded location off the River Itaqua\u00ed after hearing what they thought sounded like somebody banging on an aluminium canoe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cThey felt it, they imagined it and they went in rowing [their canoes],\u201d said Binin Matis. \u201cIndigenous people can feel these things, like a spirit. They\u2019re Bruno\u2019s!\u201d searchers shouted as they examined the item.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Minutes later a pair of dark-coloured trousers \u2013 which people who know Pereira also recognized as being his \u2013 emerged from the water before disappearing out of view.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Federal police officers were summoned and, after arriving on Sunday morning, sealed off the narrow channel of water leading to the area and deployed a team of forensic officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The forensic officers entered the flooded forest in small boats and confirmed the find.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">On Sunday evening a federal police statement said the recovered items included a pair of trousers, a pair of boots and a healthcare card belonging to Pereira and a backpack filled with clothes and a pair of boots belonging to Phillips.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"b660a264-4d7a-420a-9dc5-30813d3087b4\" class=\" dcr-10khgmf\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1b267dg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"dcr-1989ovb\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/bccce20f27a409887a0123017019ffd83c1bf700\/0_192_4000_2400\/master\/4000.jpg?width=445&amp;quality=45&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;dpr=2&amp;s=18e4797809157564fea8a5ff3c9865cd\" alt=\"A firefighter holds a phone with a picture showing the moment a backpack was found during a search for Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2400\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"dcr-5yynor\"><span class=\"dcr-19x4pdv\">A firefighter holds a phone with a picture showing the moment a backpack was found during a search for Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips.<\/span>\u00a0Photograph: Edmar Barros\/AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"ad-slot-container ad-slot--offset-right\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Indigenous experts and witnesses said the breakthrough would have been impossible without the efforts and profound local knowledge of the Indigenous search teams who have been scouring the jungles and rivers of the Javari region for any trace of the two men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cThey are the Justice League of the jungle,\u201d said one military police official involved in the search for the two men, who had been returning from a four-day reporting trip when they vanished early last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cWithout their knowledge, and without them we would never have found any of this,\u201d said Fabr\u00edcio Ferreira Amorim, an Indigenous defender who is helping coordinate the search mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Phillips, a longtime Guardian contributor, had been in the Javari region \u2013 which is home to the world\u2019s largest concentration of uncontacted tribes \u2013 as part of reporting he was conducting for a book on the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">On Saturday his Brazilian mother-in-law conceded\u00a0she no longer believed the two men would be returning home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cThey are no longer with us,\u201d she wrote on social media. \u201cTheir souls have joined those of so many others who gave their lives in defence of the rainforest and Indigenous peoples.\u201d<br \/>\nstory by tom phillips<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Personal items belonging to the British journalist\u00a0Dom Phillips\u00a0and Brazilian Indigenous expert\u00a0Bruno Pereira\u00a0have been found in an area of flooded forest near the Amazonian river on which they were last seen.
