{"id":23522,"date":"2022-06-17T09:31:51","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T09:31:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=23522"},"modified":"2022-06-17T09:31:51","modified_gmt":"2022-06-17T09:31:51","slug":"priti-patel-approves-julian-assanges-extradition-to-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/06\/17\/priti-patel-approves-julian-assanges-extradition-to-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Priti Patel approves Julian Assange\u2019s extradition to US"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-j7ihvk\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector  dcr-18wsxay\">\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Priti Patel has approved the extradition of WikiLeaks co-founder\u00a0Julian Assange\u00a0to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The case passed to the home secretary last month after the\u00a0supreme court ruled\u00a0that there were no legal questions over assurances given by US authorities over how he is likely to be treated.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sign-in-gate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">While Patel has given a green light, an expected cross-appeal by Assange\u2019s legal team would restart the clock on a renewed legal battle in the courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">It is likely to focus on grounds such as the right to freedom of expression and whether the extradition request is politically motivated. Patel had been considering whether the US extradition request met remaining legal tests, including a promise not to execute him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">A Home Office spokesperson said: \u201cUnder the\u00a0Extradition\u00a0Act 2003, the secretary of state must sign an extradition order if there are no grounds to prohibit the order being made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cExtradition requests are only sent to the home secretary once a judge decides it can proceed after considering various aspects of the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cOn 17 June, following consideration by both the magistrates court and high court, the extradition of Mr Julian Assange to the US was ordered. Mr Assange retains the normal 14-day right to appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cIn this case, the UK courts have not found that it would be oppressive, unjust or an abuse of process to extradite Mr Assange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cNor have they found that extradition would be incompatible with his human rights, including his right to a fair trial and to freedom of expression, and that whilst in the US he will be treated appropriately, including in relation to his health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\"><em>More details soon \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-1k32900\" data-print-layout=\"hide\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Priti Patel has approved the extradition of WikiLeaks co-founder\u00a0Julian Assange\u00a0to the US.
