R. Kelly, the former R&B singer who had long escaped criminal penalties despite decades of sexual misconduct allegations, was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday for sex trafficking and racketeering.<\/p>\n
The sentencing in Brooklyn marks the culmination of a stunning downfall for Mr. Kelly, 55, from a superstar hit maker who was known as the king of R&B, to a shunned artist whose musical legacy has become inextricable from his abuses.<\/p>\n
The chart-topping artist was among the most successful American musicians in the 1990s and 2000s, known for hits like \u201cI Believe I Can Fly.\u201d But as his public image soared, he exploited his vast access to young fans and aspiring artists at concerts, luring them into sex with little regard for their age.<\/p>\n
The multiplatinum singer was found guilty on nine counts of racketeering and other crimes in September, after his federal trial in New York shed light on how he used enablers and sycophants to ensnare fans and aspiring artists while controlling their lives.<\/p>\n
The case was widely seen as a crucial milestone for the #MeToo movement, representing the first high-profile trial since the national reckoning around sexual misconduct to feature a powerful man whose victims were primarily Black women.<\/p>\n
Before the sentence was read, Judge Donnelly listened to several accusers deliver vivid victim impact statements, detailing the ways their lives were marred by the singer.<\/p>\n
The accounts added to the trial testimony of 11 accusers \u2014 nine women and two men \u2014 who often told jurors that Mr. Kelly had inflicted severe sexual, physical and emotional abuse. Several testified that they were minors when he first had sex with them.<\/p>\n
Mr. Kelly\u2019s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, had argued that the government\u2019s understanding of the appropriate sentencing range was flawed \u2014 and asked for a sentence of under 10 years. But Judge Donnelly ultimately agreed with prosecutors, who asked for a term \u201cin excess of 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Federal prosecutors wrote in their sentencing letter that Mr. Kelly has shown no remorse and for decades \u201cexhibited a callous disregard\u201d for the effects of his abuse on victims. His actions seemed to have been \u201cfueled by narcissism and a belief that his musical talent absolved him of any need to conform his conduct\u201d to the law, they wrote in their argument for his sentence.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe committed these crimes using his fame and stardom as both a shield, which prevented close scrutiny or condemnation of his actions,\u201d prosecutors wrote. \u201cAnd a sword, which gave him access to wealth and a network of enablers to facilitate his crimes, and an adoring fan base from which to cull his victims.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was first accused of having sex with underage girls in the 1990s, and his illegal marriage to the singer Aaliyah in 1994, who was 15 at the time, prompted questions about his behavior. A few years later, in 2002, Mr. Kelly was indicted on child pornography charges, but was acquitted in 2008 at a trial in Chicago.<\/p>\n
It was not until the #MeToo movement renewed scrutiny of his conduct that a new wave of charges arrived \u2014 and a conviction finally stuck in New York.<\/p>\n
In her sentencing letter, which was unsealed on Tuesday, Ms. Bonjean, Mr. Kelly\u2019s lawyer, told the judge that prosecutors portrayed her client \u201cas a one-dimensional villain, undeserving of any measure of humanity or dignity\u201d and that \u201cthere is far more to the picture.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said that his \u201ctraumatic childhood,\u201d which includes \u201csevere history of sexual abuse\u201d by relatives and others, warrants a lenient sentence. Mr. Kelly said in a 2016 interview with GQ that he was sexually abused while growing up.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is not an evil monster but a complex (unquestionably flawed) human-being who faced overwhelming challenges in childhood that shaped his adult life,\u201d Ms. Bonjean wrote.<\/p>\n
At trial, Mr. Kelly\u2019s lawyers sought to frame his accusers as obsessive fans and opportunists who sought financial gain. But the jury ultimately believed the prosecution.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe defendant\u2019s victims aren\u2019t groupies or gold diggers. They\u2019re human beings,\u201d Nadia Shihata, an assistant U.S. attorney, said at the end of the trial. \u201cDaughters, sisters, some are now mothers. And their lives matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
