{"id":24220,"date":"2022-07-12T07:40:29","date_gmt":"2022-07-12T07:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=24220"},"modified":"2022-07-12T07:40:29","modified_gmt":"2022-07-12T07:40:29","slug":"govt-to-meet-teacher-unions-other-worker-groups-today-over-cola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/07\/12\/govt-to-meet-teacher-unions-other-worker-groups-today-over-cola\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t to meet teacher unions, other worker groups today over COLA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government will today, Tuesday, begin negotiations with teacher unions, the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association and other labour groups, over the demand for the Cost of Living Allowance.<\/p>\n<p>The medical doctors are also demanding 20 percent of their basic salary as a cost of living allowance due to what they describe as harsh economic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Four teacher unions have already laid down their tools over the government\u2019s failure to pay the allowance.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Citi News, monitored by NSEMGH, ahead of today\u2019s meeting, the Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association GMA, Dr. Justice Yankson said the outcome of the meeting will determine their next line of action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is only after the negotiations have ended that the GMA can say these are the outcomes\u2026 and if they are not okay, then we will have to take a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut for now, the key thing is that negotiations that were due to start, we will partake fully, and we hope that the employer will come to the table with something concrete that will ultimately appease labour in totality,\u201d Dr. Yankson said.<\/p>\n<p>A meeting last week between the leadership of the four striking teacher labour unions and the government to resolve the impasse ended in a stalemate.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the CEO of Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Benjamin Arthur; Director-General of Ghana Education Service, Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa; Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government will today, Tuesday, begin negotiations with teacher unions, the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association and other labour groups, over the demand for the Cost of Living Allowance.
