It was revealed to the world yesterday by US President Joe Biden<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mol-b40283a0-01b7-11ed-9614-c300ba50b4ae\" class=\"art-ins mol-factbox sciencetech halfRHS\" data-version=\"2\" data-permabox-url=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-11005861\/James-Webb-space-telescope-snaps-detailed-photos-universe-seen.html\">\n<h3 class=\"mol-factbox-title\">HOW DOES JAMES WEBB SEE BACK IN TIME?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ins cleared mol-factbox-body\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The further away an object is, the further back in time we are looking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This is because of the time it takes light to travel from the object to us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">With James Webb&#8217;s larger mirror, it will be able to see almost the whole way back to the beginning of the universe, more than 13.5 billion years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">With its ability to view the Universe in longer wavelength infrared light, James Webb will be capable of seeing some of the most distant galaxies in our universe, certainly with more ease than than the visible\/ultraviolet light view of Hubble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This is because light from distant objects is stretched out by the expansion of our universe &#8211; an effect known as redshift &#8211; pushing the light out of the visible range and into infrared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Source: Royal Museums Greenwich<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<\/div>\n<div data-swipe-article=\"false\">\n<div id=\"mpu_factbox_1\" class=\"adHolder mpu molads_mpu_factbox watermark\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"socialContainer-1Yly1\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Yesterday, US President\u00a0<a id=\"mol-68192600-01f4-11ed-a43f-1789f88d060b\" class=\"class\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/joe-biden\/index.html\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u00a0previewed the main event as he unveiled one of Webb&#8217;s images that showed a cluster of galaxies 4 billion light-years away from Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This provided the deepest and sharpest infrared look at the distant universe to date, capturing the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723 as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">President Biden\u00a0called it &#8216;a historic moment for science and technology, for astronomy and space exploration and all of humanity&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This deep field, taken by Webb&#8217;s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), is a composite made from images at different wavelengths and took just 12.5 hours to compile, compared with the weeks it took predecessor Hubble to observe other &#8216;deep fields&#8217; \u2013 images of a portion of the sky taken with a very long exposure time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to NASA, SMACS 0723 has a gravitational pull\u00a0so powerful that it warps both space-time and the path that light subsequently travels through it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">By studying this light, scientists want to learn about the origins of the cosmos, and possibly even catch a glimpse of the elusive photons that came from the very first stars to ever exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">NASA said Webb&#8217;s NIRCam has brought distant galaxies into sharp focus in the new image \u2014 they have tiny, faint structures that have never been seen before, including star clusters and diffuse features.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;If you held a grain of sand on the tip of your finger at arm&#8217;s length. That&#8217;s what you&#8217;re seeing, just one little speck, said NASA administrator Bill Nelson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;You&#8217;re seeing galaxies that are shining around other galaxies who&#8217;s light has been bent and you&#8217;re seeing just a small little portion of the universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We&#8217;re looking back more than 13 billion years. class=\"mol-factbox-title\">WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WEBB AND HUBBLE?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ins cleared mol-factbox-body\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">NASA likes to think of James Webb as a successor to Hubble rather than a replacement, as the two will work in tandem for a while.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">That&#8217;s because they look at stars and galaxies in different ways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Hubble\u00a0studies the universe predominantly at optical, or visible, wavelengths, which is the\u00a0same type of light we detect with our eyes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Webb, on the other hand, is set up to specifically look in the infrared, which is invisible to our eyes but allows it to identify the glow from the most distant objects in the universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It works in much the same way night vision goggles use thermal imaging technology to capture infrared light.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div What more is out there?
