He was charged with killing two victims and was identified as the prime suspect in the other two slayings, authorities announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">The Muslim community is breathing \u201can incredible sigh of relief,\u201d said Ahmad Assed, president of the Islamic Center of New Mexico. \u201cLives have been turned upside down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">It wasn\u2019t immediately clear whether Syed had an attorney to speak on his behalf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">The first killing last November was followed by three more between July 26 and Aug. 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Police Chief Harold Medina said it was not clear yet whether the deaths should be classified as hate crimes or serial killings or both.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-dfp-0-2-331\">\n<div class=\"Component-adTitle-0-2-24\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Syed was from Afghanistan and had lived in the United States for about five years, police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">\u201cThe offender knew the victims to some extent, and an interpersonal conflict may have led to the shootings,\u201d a police statement said, although investigators were still working to identify how they had crossed paths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">When asked specifically if Syed, a Sunni Muslim, was angry that his daughter married a Shiite Muslim, Deputy Police Cmdr. Kyle Hartsock did not respond directly. He said \u201cmotives are still being explored fully to understand what they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Assed acknowledged that \u201cthere was a marriage,\u201d but he cautioned against coming to any conclusions about the motivation of Syed, who occasionally attended the center\u2019s mosque.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Police said Syed gave them a statement but didn\u2019t disclose details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">The slayings drew the attention of President Joe Biden, who said such attacks \u201chave no place in America.\u201d They also sent a shudder through Muslim communities across the U.S. Some people questioned their safety and limited their movements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">\u201cThere is no justification for this evil. There is no justification to take an innocent life,\u201d Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American\u2013Islamic Relations, said at a Tuesday news conference in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<div data-key=\"media-placeholder\">\n<div class=\"YoutubeEmbed youtubeEmbed loaded\">\n<div class=\"vertical-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"vertical-limit\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"horizontal-limit\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"youtube-wrapper-QL8QNy1t-PU-article\" class=\"youtube-player\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail high-res\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/QL8QNy1t-PU\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Youtube video thumbnail\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"icon\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">He called the killings \u201cderanged behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">The earliest case involves the November killing of Mohammad Ahmadi, 62, from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Naeem Hussain, a 25-year-old man from Pakistan, was killed Friday night. His death came just days after those of Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, and Aftab Hussein, 41, who were also from Pakistan and members of the same mosque.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Ehsan Chahalmi, the brother-in-law of Naeem Hussain, said he was \u201ca generous, kind, giving, forgiving and loving soul that has been taken away from us forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">For now, Syed is charged in the killings of Aftab Hussein and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain because bullet casings found at the crime scenes were linked to a gun found at his home, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Investigators consider Syed to be the primary suspect in the deaths of Naeem Hussain and Ahmadi but have not yet filed charges in those cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">The announcement that the shootings appeared to be linked produced more than 200 tips, including one from the Muslim community that police credited with leading them to the Syed family.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-dfp-0-2-331\">\n<div class=\"Component-adTitle-0-2-24\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Police said they were about to search Syed\u2019s Albuquerque home on Monday when they saw him drive away in a Volkswagen Jetta that investigators believe was used in at least one of the slayings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Officers followed him to Santa Rosa, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) east of Albuquerque, where they pulled him over. Multiple firearms were recovered from his home and car, police said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-dfp-0-2-331\">\n<div class=\"Component-placeholderWrapper-0-2-27\">\n<div class=\"sovrn-article-midarticle proper-dynamic-insertion\">\n<div class=\"proper-ad-unit\">\n<div id=\"proper-ad-apnews_article_midarticle_7\" data-google-query-id=\"CNiQj7SkvPkCFf0RBgAd6vsFIw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/5376056,15786418\/apnews_article_midarticle\/dynamic_7_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Syed\u2019s sons were questioned and released, according to authorities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Prosecutors expect to file murder charges in state court and are considering adding a federal case, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Shiites make up the second largest branch in Islam after Sunnis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Aneela Abad, general secretary at the Islamic center, said the two Muslim communities in New Mexico enjoy warm ties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">\u201cOur Shiite community has always been there for us and we, Sunnis, have always been there for them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-337 Component-p-0-2-327\">Muhammad Afzaal Hussain had worked as a field organizer for Democratic Rep.
