{"id":25349,"date":"2022-09-05T19:46:34","date_gmt":"2022-09-05T19:46:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=25349"},"modified":"2022-09-05T19:46:34","modified_gmt":"2022-09-05T19:46:34","slug":"eu-calls-on-liz-truss-to-abide-by-brexit-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/09\/05\/eu-calls-on-liz-truss-to-abide-by-brexit-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"EU calls on Liz Truss to abide by Brexit deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The EU has urged\u00a0Liz Truss\u00a0to respect the Brexit agreement, as it called on the incoming British prime minister to take a broader view of Britain\u2019s relationship with Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The European Commission president,\u00a0Ursula von der Leyen, who is expected to speak to Truss by phone in the coming days, tweeted her congratulations, referring to common challenges, from climate change to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sign-in-gate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">She said: \u201cI look forward to a constructive relationship, in full respect of our agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d, the EU\u2019s top official in charge of relations with the UK, said a positive relationship between the two was of great strategic importance. \u201cI stand ready to work intensively and constructively with my new UK interlocutor to foster such a partnership, in full respect of our agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot-container \"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The French president, Emmanuel Macron, also congratulated Truss, stating that \u201cthe British nation is our ally\u201d, a few weeks after Truss told Tory members at a hustings event in August that she was undecided as to whether he was \u201cfriend or foe\u201d when asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cCongratulations to Liz Truss on her election,\u201d Macron tweeted. \u201cThe British people are our friends, the British nation is our ally. Let us continue working together to defend our shared interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Behind the scenes, EU officials have\u00a0low expectations of an improvement in relations with Truss, the architect of a bill to override key aspects of the Northern Ireland protocol, which could lead to a trade war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cThe wish on this side is for things to improve, for there to be a more constructive relationship, but I don\u2019t think anybody is holding their breath,\u201d an EU diplomat said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The diplomat suggested that Truss\u2019s reliance on Eurosceptic MPs in the Conservative parliamentary party did not bode well for her ability to strike compromises. They added: \u201cLooking at where Liz Truss got her support I don\u2019t really expect her to have that much room for manoeuvre. Loiseau, a former\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/europe-news\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Europe<\/a>\u00a0minister, added: \u201cI hope she will refrain from making things more difficult between the EU and the UK and engage in a strong partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">David McAllister, a German centre-right MEP, who chairs the European parliament\u2019s foreign affairs committee, congratulated Truss, while pointing to the agreements the British government had signed. He said: \u201cThe EU is keen to have stable and positive relations with the United Kingdom based on our agreements, mutually negotiated, signed and ratified by the EU and the UK. Facilitating the practical implementation of the protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland is of key importances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, was one of the first leaders to offer his public congratulations, in a tweet that avoided mentioning the UK-EU dispute. He said: \u201cI am looking forward to our cooperation in these challenging times. The UK and Germany will continue to work closely together \u2013 as partners and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Truss, who will become prime minister on Tuesday, will be tested on her openness to work with the EU when she is invited to join European leaders for a summit in October. She\u00a0will be invited\u00a0to discuss the creation of the European Political Community, a pan-European body dedicated to promoting security and other ties among the nations of Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Her elevation to 10 Downing Street was given short shrift by the Kremlin, which said dire relations with Britain could get even worse. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t like to say that things can change for the worse, because it\u2019s hard to imagine anything worse,\u201d the Kremlin\u2019s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov replied when asked if Moscow expected any shift in relations with Britain, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cBut unfortunately, this cannot be ruled out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">In Moscow, Truss is best known for her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2022\/feb\/10\/russia-must-respect-ukraine-sovereignty-liz-truss-talks-open?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">February meeting with the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov<\/a>, who complained that her interventions were \u201cjust slogans shouted from the tribunes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">In the meeting, which took place two weeks before the Russian invasion, Truss challenged Lavrov on the buildup of 100,000 troops on Ukraine\u2019s border, which Moscow denied was preparation for an attack. She was also mocked by the Russian government for confusing Russian regions with Ukrainian territory and apparently mixing up the Black and Baltic Seas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Truss received a warmer reaction from the UK\u2019s traditional allies. In a statement of congratulations, New Zealand\u2019s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, referred to New Zealand\u2019s \u201cexceptionally strong relationship with the United Kingdom based on our shared values, history and culture\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">In her roles as trade and then foreign secretary, Truss was \u201ca staunch supporter of the UK\u2019s \u2018tilt\u2019 to the Indo-Pacific and played a central role in advancing our historic free trade agreement\u201d Ardern said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Gibraltar\u2019s chief minister, Fabian Picardo, praised Truss\u2019s role in negotiations over the post-Brexit future of the British overseas territory, which voted to remain in the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cLiz was instrumental in delivering trade deals for Gibraltar and as foreign secretary we have worked very closely together on all issues, not least on the negotiations for a UK\/EU treaty on Gibraltar\u2019s future relationship with the EU,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The EU has urged\u00a0Liz Truss\u00a0to respect the Brexit agreement, as it called on the incoming British prime minister to take a broader view of Britain\u2019s relationship with Europe.
