{"id":25361,"date":"2022-09-06T06:55:05","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T06:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=25361"},"modified":"2022-09-06T06:55:05","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T06:55:05","slug":"china-earthquake-kills-dozens-as-tremors-shake-locked-down-chengdu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/09\/06\/china-earthquake-kills-dozens-as-tremors-shake-locked-down-chengdu\/","title":{"rendered":"China earthquake kills dozens as tremors shake locked-down Chengdu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">At least 65 people have been killed in a strong earthquake that struck south-western\u00a0China\u00a0and was felt by millions of people confined to their homes under a strict Covid lockdown in Chengdu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The 6.6-magnitude quake hit about 26 miles (43km) south-east of the city of Kangding at a depth of about six miles, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"sign-in-gate\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said that 17 people died in Ya\u2019an city, while 29 deaths were reported in neighbouring Ganzi prefecture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cAnother 16 people were missing and 50 were injured,\u201d CCTV said late on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Tremors also shook buildings in the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu and the nearby city of Chongqing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-slot-container \"><\/div>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">One resident, Chen, said: \u201cI felt it quite strongly and some of my neighbours on the ground floor said they felt it very noticeably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">\u201cBut because Chengdu is under epidemic management, people aren\u2019t allowed to leave their residential compounds, so many of them rushed out into their courtyards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">CCTV reported that mountain landslides triggered by the quake caused \u201csevere damage\u201d in at least one town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">A road to another town was blocked and telecommunications lines in areas home to more than 10,000 people were severed, the broadcaster said, adding that shocks also forced some power stations offline in Garz\u00ea and Ya\u2019an.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">A video posted online by the China Earthquake Networks Centre showed boulders plunging down mountainsides in Luding County, kicking up clouds of dust as tremors caused telephone lines to sway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">State media reported that several aftershocks were recorded in nearby areas. A smaller 4.6-magnitude tremor struck eastern Tibet less than an hour after the initial quake, according to the USGS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Hundreds of rescue workers were dispatched to the epicentre, CCTV reported, showing footage of firefighters in orange jumpsuits boarding lorries and navigating a motorway littered with rocks and other debris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The Sichuan seismological authority said more than 1,000 soldiers had been brought in to help rescue workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Authorities also sent thousands of tents, blankets and foldable beds to the affected areas, according to the broadcaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">China\u2019s president, Xi Jinping, called for local authorities to \u201cmake saving lives the first priority, go all out to rescue people in disaster-stricken areas and minimise loss of life\u201d, CCTV reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">A resident of Chongqing said the quake was \u201cpretty noticeable\u201d and that it had shaken the lights and furniture in his fifth-floor apartment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">An\u00a08.0-magnitude earthquake in 2008\u00a0in Sichuan left tens of thousands of people dead and caused enormous damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">In June, at least four people were killed and dozens more injured in two earthquakes in south-western China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">Authorities in Chengdu\u00a0extended the city\u2019s lockdown\u00a0on Sunday as coronavirus cases crept up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-xry7m2\">The region has also endured a summer of extreme weather, with a record-breaking heatwave\u00a0causing rivers to dry up\u00a0in areas including Chongqing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least 65 people have been killed in a strong earthquake that struck south-western\u00a0China\u00a0and was felt by millions of people confined to their homes under a strict Covid lockdown in Chengdu.
