{"id":25894,"date":"2022-09-25T07:15:43","date_gmt":"2022-09-25T07:15:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=25894"},"modified":"2022-09-25T07:15:44","modified_gmt":"2022-09-25T07:15:44","slug":"russias-allies-china-and-india-call-for-negotiations-to-end-ukraine-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/09\/25\/russias-allies-china-and-india-call-for-negotiations-to-end-ukraine-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia\u2019s allies China and India call for negotiations to end Ukraine war"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China and India have called for a negotiated end to the\u00a0Ukraine war, stopping short of robust support for traditional ally Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a week of pressure at the\u00a0United Nations general assembly, Russia\u2019s foreign minister took the general assembly rostrum to deliver a fiery rebuke to western nations for what he termed a \u201cgrotesque\u201d campaign against Russians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But no major nation has rallied behind Russia, including China, which just days before the February invasion of Ukraine had vowed an \u201cunbreakable\u201d bond with President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s foreign minister, Wang Yi, called on Russia and Ukraine to \u201ckeep the crisis from spilling over\u201d and from affecting developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChina supports all efforts conducive to the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine crisis. The pressing priority is to facilitate talks for peace,\u201d Wang said on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fundamental solution is to address the legitimate security concerns of all parties and build a balanced, effective and sustainable security architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his visit to the United Nations, Wang met Ukraine\u2019s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, in their first talks since the war began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month Putin acknowledged Chinese \u201cconcerns\u201d about Ukraine during a meeting with his counterpart, Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"3f22eed0-b424-4a91-9753-bd14b9a9b225\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/sep\/24\/russia-ukraine-war-latest-what-we-know-on-day-213-of-the-invasion\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/caa670cee410c06e620766ad0ed878c071fd70db\/0_0_3500_2102\/master\/3500.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=e06a5de45a0f0fe5d4e797cf9e53ba65\" alt=\"A military member of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic walks with a firearm as others queue during the so-called \u2018referendums\u2019 in Ukraine\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US officials have been heartened by what they see as China\u2019s lack of concrete backing for the war and said that Beijing has declined requests to send military equipment, forcing Russia to rely on North Korea and Iran as its own supplies dwindle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China\u2019s reaction to Russia is being closely watched for clues on its approach to Taiwan, a self-governing democracy that Beijing claims as its territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wang held firm that China would take \u201cforceful steps\u201d against any interference, insisting that efforts to prevent \u201creunification\u201d with Taiwan would be \u201ccrushed by the wheels of history\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India, unlike China, has a warm relationship with the United States but it has historical ties with Russia, its traditional defence supplier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the Ukraine conflict continues to rage, we are often asked whose side we are on,\u201d said India\u2019s foreign minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur answer, each time, is straight and honest \u2013 India is on the side of peace and will remain firmly there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are on the side that calls for dialogue and diplomacy as the only way out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia\u2019s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, at a news conference declined to answer whether there has been any pressure from China. In his speech, he sought to cast blame squarely on the west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe official Russophobia in the west is unprecedented. Now the scope is grotesque,\u201d Lavrov told the general assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are not shying away from declaring the intent to inflict not only military defeat on our country but also to destroy and fracture Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States, he said, since the end of the cold war has acted as if it is \u201can envoy of God on Earth, with the sacred right to act with impunity wherever and whenever they want\u201d, Lavrov said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also blasted the European Union as an \u201cauthoritarian, harsh, dictatorial entity\u201d and said the bloc\u2019s leadership forced one member state\u2019s leader \u2013 the Cypriot president, Nicos Anastasiades \u2013 to cancel a planned meeting with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lavrov criticised the west for not engaging with Russia, saying, \u201cwe have never stepped away from maintaining contact\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Western powers are looking at further sanctions after Putin called up reservists and made a veiled threat to use nuclear weapons, and have refused to recognise results of referendums on Russian annexation being held in occupied territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have welcomed Lavrov\u2019s isolation, noting how he only showed up at a security council session on Thursday to deliver remarks and not to listen to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia enjoyed one rare voice of support on Saturday at the general assembly. Mali\u2019s interim prime minister, Col Abdoulaye Ma\u00efga, appointed by coup leaders, hailed the \u201cexemplary and fruitful cooperation\u201d with Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The junta has welcomed Russia\u2019s Wagner Group security firm, despite western allegations of rights abuses, as France pulled out troops who had been struggling to contain a jihadist insurgency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026 we have a small favour to ask.
