Authorities in <strong>Kyiv<\/strong> said eight people had died and 24 were injured in a Russian missile strike on the capital\u2019s Shevchenkivskyi district this morning. <strong>Lviv<\/strong>, <strong>Kherson<\/strong>, <strong>Dnipro<\/strong>, <strong>Zaporizhzhia<\/strong> and <strong>Mykolaiv<\/strong> were also among the areas targeted.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Barely hours after the Russian president, <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong>, denounced the bridge attack on Saturday as an \u201cact of terrorism\u201d that he blamed on Ukraine\u2019s secret services, missiles slammed into the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, during morning rush-hour, striking targets including a popular tourist bridge and a major road junction.<\/li><li>According to Ukraine\u2019s military, by mid-morning on Monday, <strong>75 missiles had been launched<\/strong>, of which it claimed over 40 had been intercepted.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In an update in the midst of the attack, the Ukrainian president, <strong>Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/strong>, said Russia had fired dozens of missiles as well as Iranian-made kamikaze drones, adding that Russia\u2019s main targets appeared to be energy infrastructure and civilians. He said his country was \u201cdealing with terrorists\u201d. Speaking outside the presidential office near where some of the missiles hit, Zelenskiy accused Russia of \u201cdeliberately choosing such a time, such goals, in order to cause as much harm as possible,\u201d he said.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Putin<\/strong> has threatened a \u201charsh response\u201d if attacks continue against Russia. In televised remarks after the wave of attacks, Putin once again blamed Ukraine for the <strong>Kerch bridge attack,<\/strong> describing it as a \u201cterrorist attack aimed at the destruction of civil critical important infrastructure of Russia\u201d. Russia had launched long-range missile attacks against Ukraine\u2019s energy, military and communications infrastructure today in retaliation for the bridge attack, he said. \u201cIt is simply impossible to leave crimes of this kind unanswered,\u201d he said.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ukraine\u2019s prime minister, <strong>Denys Shmyhal<\/strong>, said 11 infrastructure facilities in eight regions and in the capital, Kyiv, had been damaged in the Russian strikes.<\/li><li>The building housing the <strong>German consulate<\/strong> in Kyiv was hit by a Russian missile strike, according to a German foreign ministry spokesperson. Although the consulate was housed in the building, it has not been operational since February. Romania\u2019s foreign minister, <strong>Bogdan Aurescu,<\/strong> said a Russian missile strike on Kyiv landed 850 metres from the <strong>Romanian embassy<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Ukraine\u2019s foreign minister <strong>Dmytro Kuleba<\/strong> made an immediate appeal to the west for the supply of increased air defence systems. <strong>Zelenskiy<\/strong> said he had agreed with German Chancellor <strong>Olaf Scholz<\/strong> an urgent meeting of <strong>G7<\/strong> leaders in response. Kuleba has cut short a tour of African nations to return to Kyiv. The <strong>G7<\/strong> will hold a call on Tuesday.<\/li><li>In an urgent round of diplomatic calls, <strong>Scholz<\/strong>, French President <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>, and the UK\u2019s foreign secretary <strong>James Cleverly<\/strong> all reiterated their support for Ukraine. <strong>Alexander De Croo<\/strong> said the bombardment of Ukraine\u2019s capital Kyiv and of civilian targets in other Ukrainian cities on Monday was \u201ca reprehensible act by Russia\u201d. Nato\u2019s secretary general, <strong>Jens Stoltenberg,<\/strong> condemned the \u201chorrific and indiscriminate\u201d missile attacks on civilian targets.<\/li><li><strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, president of the European Commission, said she was \u201cshocked and appalled by the vicious attack on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Russia once again has shown to the world what it stands for \u2013 it is terror and brutality.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Charles Michel<\/strong>, the president of the European Council, unequivocally labelled Monday\u2019s actions by Russia as war crimes.<\/li><li><strong>Maksym Kozytskyi<\/strong>, the governor of <strong>Lviv<\/strong>, is among authorities in the areas struck to appeal to residents to try to limit electric consumption to preserve supplies.<\/li><li>The <strong>International Committee of the Red Cross<\/strong> has paused its operations in Ukraine for security reasons, according to a spokesperson.<\/li><li>The BBC\u2019s <strong>Hugo Bachega<\/strong> ducked for cover during a live broadcast which was interrupted as rockets rained down on Kyiv.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Belarus<\/strong> leader, <strong>Alexander Lukashenko<\/strong>, said Belarus and Russia would deploy a joint military task force on the country\u2019s western borders in response to what he called an aggravation of tension.<\/li><li><strong>Moldova<\/strong>\u2019s foreign minister <strong>Nicu Popescu<\/strong> summoned Russia\u2019s ambassador to explain why missiles launched from the Black Sea into Ukraine crossed Moldova\u2019s airspace.<\/li><li><strong>Poland<\/strong>\u2019s border guard said that the electricity has failed on Ukraine\u2019s side of border crossings at <strong>Medyka<\/strong> and <strong>Korczowa<\/strong>, but that they are still working normally. The crossings border Ukraine\u2019s <strong>Lviv<\/strong> region, where there are reported power outages after Russian strikes on critical infrastructure earlier this morning.<\/li><li><strong>A power line that was cut by shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been restored<\/strong>, according to the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). \u201cEngineers restored external power to Zaporizhzhya NPP today, a day after the facility lost the connection to this last remaining operating power line due to shelling \u2014 enabling ZNPP to start switching off its emergency diesel generators,\u201d the IAEA said.<\/li><li><strong>Denmark<\/strong>\u2019s Baltic Sea island of <strong>Bornholm<\/strong>, located near the presumed sabotage attack on <strong>Nord Stream<\/strong>\u2019s gas pipelines, on Monday suffered an unexplained power outage, electricity operator Energinet said.<\/li><li><strong>Latvia<\/strong>\u2019s prime minister, <strong>Kri\u0161j\u0101nis Kari\u0146\u0161<\/strong>, has called on EU leaders to stop all tourist visas for Russians, reigniting the debate about further tightening sanctions against Vladimir Putin\u2019s Russia.<\/li><li>The <strong>Council of Europe<\/strong> awarded detained Russian opposition politician <strong>Vladimir Kara-Murza<\/strong> the Vaclav Havel human rights prize on Monday for what it called his bravery in standing up to Russia\u2019s leaders.<\/li><li><strong>Russian divers are to examine the extent of the damage<\/strong> caused by the blast on the road-and-rail bridge.
