{"id":26496,"date":"2022-10-14T05:06:35","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T05:06:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=26496"},"modified":"2022-10-14T05:06:37","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T05:06:37","slug":"breastfeeding-not-breast-sucking-prevents-breast-cancer-doctor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/10\/14\/breastfeeding-not-breast-sucking-prevents-breast-cancer-doctor\/","title":{"rendered":"Breastfeeding, not breast sucking prevents breast cancer \u2013 Doctor\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Ewuradjoa Ahimah Nunoo has explained it is breastfeeding and not breast sucking that prevents breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She spoke to Class News\u2019 Prince Benjamin at the maiden edition of the \u2018Pink October: Breast Cancer Educational Talk\u2019 organised by Duala Medical Center and Ghana Armed Forces Medical Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A medical doctor, she reacted to the popular rumour that sucking of female breasts especially by their male counterparts aids in preventing breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was firm in saying, \u201cIt is not the mechanical action of the breast being sucked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are hormones that are produced when you breastfeed, and one is called prolactin,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat [prolactin] actually prevents breast cancer,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is the sucking of a baby on the [lactating] mother\u2019s breast nipples that prevents breast cancer and not necessarily an adult male sucking the breasts, no,\u201d she clarified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the male is sucking, breastmilk is not being produced, and that hormone prolactin is not being produced,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the multiple award-winning health advocate, \u201cit is the breastmilk production and that hormone being secreted\u201d that prevents breast cancer and \u201cnot because the nipple is being sucked. It is not the sucking action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, she stressed, a baby sucking on the mother\u2019s nipple after she is done lactating will also contribute nothing to breast cancer prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the event which took place today, Thursday, 13 October 2022, at the Garrison Methodist-Presbyterian Church, Burma Camp, Accra, it was revealed that every 12 months a woman breastfeeds, she reduces her risk of breast cancer by about 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, according to a study conducted by Yale researcher,Tongzhang Zheng,among women in China, breastfeeding for at least two years reduces a woman&#8217;s risk of developing breast cancer by 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of Chinese culture is long term breastfeeding.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Ewuradjoa Ahimah Nunoo has explained it is breastfeeding and not breast sucking that prevents breast cancer.
