Is it because governments don’t care about the people that live in them? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is\u00a0it\u00a0because\u00a0TB\u00a0primarily\u00a0affects\u00a0poor\u00a0people\u00a0from\u00a0impoverished\u00a0nations,\u00a0and\u00a0it\u00a0is\u00a0more\u00a0convenient\u00a0to\u00a0ignore\u00a0them,\u00a0or\u00a0is\u00a0it\u00a0because\u00a0the\u00a0life\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0person\u00a0dying\u00a0from\u00a0TB\u00a0is\u00a0less\u00a0important?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mel Spigelman, head of the TB Alliance, claimed that Covid had taken “scarce resources” away from TB programs and the creation of innovative treatments, such as vaccinations, to combat the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\u00a0need\u00a0for\u00a0medical\u00a0innovations,\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0potent\u00a0drug\u00a0regimens,\u00a0efficient\u00a0vaccinations,\u00a0and\u00a0point-of-care\u00a0TB\u00a0tests,\u00a0is\u00a0greater\u00a0than\u00a0ever,\u00a0he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TB, which mostly affects the lungs, spreads by droplets in the air. It can be challenging to detect and can stay dormant for many years before causing health issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Prof. Jamie Triccas, a TB researcher at the University of Sydney, the existing vaccination, known as BCG, is more than 100 years old and only partially effective in adults, which limits our ability to control transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Triccas, some promising vaccines have completed late-stage clinical studies but lack the financing necessary to complete their development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Global funding for tuberculosis research totaled $915 million in 2020, well short of the $2 billion target set by the UN in 2018, according to a report released in December 2021 by the Treatment Action Group and the Stop TB Partnership. 13% of that sum was used for vaccine research, while Covid vaccines received billions in investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2021, global investment on key TB services decreased from $6 billion in 2019 to $5.4 billion, which is less than half of the global objective of $13 billion, according to the WHO’s annual Global TB Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“If the epidemic has taught us anything, it is that with unity, dedication, innovation, and the equitable use of instruments, we can overcome serious health risks,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
