Political leaders from both sides of the aisle on Sunday made their closing arguments to voters two days before the hotly contested US midterm elections, with several top\u00a0Democrats\u00a0framing the election as a referendum on American democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Republicanans, meanwhile, swung back by saying that they would better address Americans\u2019 economic woes and repeatedly insisted their rivals were ill-equipped to help voters despite Democratic rhetoric that the GOP was to blame for hthe nation\u2019s political divisiveness.Trump <\/a>expected to announce 2024 campaign before end of <\/a>November<\/p>\n\n\n\n Klobuchar also warned that a shift right could spell danger for this country. She noted that numerous Republican candidates have\u00a0sowed doubt\u00a0over the 2020 elections \u2013 and said that\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s shadow is \u201clooming over\u201d key states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese candidates are throwing truth out the window \u2013 they\u2019re shattering the rule of law and they\u2019re laughing at political violence,\u201d Klobuchar said. \u201cIf you\u2019re a Democrat, independent, or moderate Republican, democracy is on the ballot and it is time to vote for democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n New Jersey Democratic senator\u00a0Cory Booker\u00a0voiced similar sentiments. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot on the line and we have to remember after what we saw at January 6, Republican or Democrat, we should be electing people that believe in our democracy, that believe in our traditions, and that ultimately want to unite people and not divide them,\u201d Booker said on ABC\u2019s This Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Referring in part to the attack on\u00a0US House speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s husband, he added: \u201cThere\u2019s a culture of contempt in this country. You\u2019re seeing election workers getting increased threats. You\u2019re seeing judges getting increased threats. Heck, you\u2019re even seeing members of Congress \u2013 as we saw with what happened to Paul Pelosi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSomething has gone wrong in our country where rising political violence, rising threats are really threatening who we are as a people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n South Carolina Democratic congressman Jim Clyburn on Fox News Sunday defended prior comments that the climate in the US had similarities to Germany in the early 1930s. The House majority whip pointed to denying election results and establishing ways that state executives can overturn election results, as well as calling the press \u201cthe enemy of the people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Clyburn insisted that he didn\u2019t think people were in the wrong if they didn\u2019t vote Democrat. Rather, wrongness involved voting for persons trying to sow skepticism about elections\u2019 validity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIf they don\u2019t vote against election deniers. If they don\u2019t vote against liars, people who lie, know full well they\u2019re lying, we all know they\u2019re lying,\u201d Clyburn said. \u201cSo if they\u2019re lying, they\u2019re denying, they\u2019re trying to delete, they\u2019re trying to nullify votes \u2013 vote against that foolishness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n During a pre-recorded interview that aired on ABC, Virginia\u2019s Republican governor,\u00a0Glenn Youngkin, told voters that his party better represented their economic interests. Youngkin also hit cultural talking points, invoking the bogeyman of rising crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAmericans are hurting right now and Republican gubernatorial candidates, because that\u2019s who I\u2019ve been spending a lot of time with, are offering commonsense solutions to these most critical issues,\u201d Youngkin said. \u201cAmericans are sitting around their tables in the evening and they\u2019re worried about inflation and they\u2019re worried about crime and they\u2019re worried about their schools and they\u2019re worried about the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cRepublicans have clearcut commonsense solutions to all of these,\u201d Youngkin also said, without detailing any of those purported solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Both sides\u2019 intensely ideological politicking ahead of Tuesday speaks to a potentially watershed outcome for the nation\u2019s future. The party in control of Congress often loses its majority during midterm elections. So a Republican majority at this point of Joe Biden\u2019s presidency would not be shocking historically speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Any dramatic political shift in the current climate, however, could fan the flames of unrest and pessimism pervading a country that is increasingly divided over issues such as voting, gun control, race, reproductive freedom and LGBTQ+ rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And, as political violence and conspiracy theories abound, Trump\u2019s divisive politics might reign supreme once more, especially as he might soon declare his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Regardless of the midterm election\u2019s outcome, it remains unclear whether politicians will be able to shepherd meaningful legislative solutions to these problems. Major legislation will probably require bipartisan cooperation, which seems unlikely in a bitterly partisan political climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On\u00a0NBC\u2019s Meet The Press, host Chuck Todd asked Florida Republican senator\u00a0Rick Scott: \u201cWhat\u2019s the first bill a Republican Congress sends to the president\u2019s desk that you actually think he would sign?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scott did little more than toe the party line, saying: \u201cI think the issue we\u2019ve got to deal with is inflation. We\u2019ve got to figure out how to spend our money wisely, so we don\u2019t continue this inflation. I think we\u2019ve got to do whatever we can to get this crime rate down, so I think we have to look at that.
