Sean Penn has given an Oscar statuette to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy during a meeting in Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a video posted on Zelenskiy\u2019s Instagram account, Penn, who has been one of the most high profile supporters of Ukraine in its fight against Russian invasion, takes the Oscar statuette out of a bag and places it on a table in front of Zelenskiy, saying: \u201cI feel terrible. This is for you. It\u2019s just a symbolic silly thing, but if I know this is here with you then I\u2019ll feel better and stronger for the fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added: \u201cWhen you win, bring it back to Malibu. I\u2019ll feel much better knowing a piece of me is here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Zelenskiy is then seen giving Penn Ukraine\u2019s Order of Merit, and the pair walk Kyiv\u2019s streets and stop at a plaque in the ground dedicated to Penn. After Penn expresses his gratitude Zelenskiy says: \u201cWe thank you very much.\u201d In a caption to his Instagram video, Zelenskiy wrote: \u201cSean brought his Oscar statuette as a symbol of faith in the victory of our country. It will be in Ukraine until the end of the war,\u201d adding: \u201cThank you for such sincere support and significant contribution to the popularisation of Ukraine in the world!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Penn has won two best actor Oscars, for Mystic River in 2003 and Milk in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Penn was in Kyiv in February 2022\u00a0as Russia commenced its full scale invasion of Ukraine and has remained steadfast in his support of Zelenskiy. In March he said\u00a0he <\/a>would \u201csmelt [his Oscars] <\/a>in <\/a>public\u201d<\/a>\u00a0if the Ukrainian president was not allowed to speak at the Academy award ceremony; in the event Zelenskiy did not appear but did\u00a0address the music industry\u2019s Grammy awards.
