{"id":27235,"date":"2022-11-11T05:20:17","date_gmt":"2022-11-11T05:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=27235"},"modified":"2022-11-11T05:20:17","modified_gmt":"2022-11-11T05:20:17","slug":"uk-frozen-18bn-of-russian-owned-assets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/11\/11\/uk-frozen-18bn-of-russian-owned-assets\/","title":{"rendered":"UK \u201cfrozen\u201d \u00a318bn of Russian-owned assets\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK government has frozen more than \u00a318bn of assets belonging to oligarchs and other Russians under the sanctions regime brought in after Vladimir Putin\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, the first official total reveals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanctions have been imposed on 1,271 people \u2013 including the former Chelsea FC owner\u00a0Roman Abramovich\u00a0and the \u201cNickel King\u201d Vladimir Potanin, Russia\u2019s second richest person \u2013 according to\u00a0the annual review\u00a0of the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), published on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"634\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2022\/11\/EF51B62D-4A2D-440B-88BD-92B18B0934DB-1024x634.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2022\/11\/EF51B62D-4A2D-440B-88BD-92B18B0934DB-1024x634.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2022\/11\/EF51B62D-4A2D-440B-88BD-92B18B0934DB-300x186.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2022\/11\/EF51B62D-4A2D-440B-88BD-92B18B0934DB-768x475.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2022\/11\/EF51B62D-4A2D-440B-88BD-92B18B0934DB-750x464.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2022\/11\/EF51B62D-4A2D-440B-88BD-92B18B0934DB.jpeg 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government said the \u201cmost severe sanctions\u201d ever imposed had resulted in the freezing of \u00a318.39bn of Russian-linked assets, which is almost \u00a36bn more than the assets held under all other UK sanction regimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrew Griffith, the economic secretary to the Treasury, said: \u201cAs staunch defenders of democracy, the UK is united with its allies in opposition to Russia\u2019s barbaric and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. We have imposed the most severe sanctions ever on Russia and it is crippling their war machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo make sure we are doing all we can to keep the pressure on Putin\u2019s corrupt cronies, we are more than doubling OFSI\u2019s headcount. Our message is clear: we will not allow Putin to succeed in this brutal war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of assets frozen does not include properties; if the many UK houses of Russian oligarchs were included, the figure would be much larger. There are\u00a0106 properties\u00a0subject to sanctions restrictions, 92 of which have been added since Russia launched its invasion on 24 February, the Land Registry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u2018Live in the mess that Putin has created\u2019: a tour of Russian oligarch-linked properties in London<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to individuals, the UK has also imposed sanctions on 120 entities and frozen the assets of 19 Russian banks, which the government said had total global assets of more than \u00a3940bn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anne-Marie Trevelyan, a Foreign Office minister, said: \u201cWhen Putin invaded Ukraine he assumed we would sit idly by. He was wrong. Instead, the UK and our international partners have stood shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in their fight for territorial integrity and political independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s report shows the scale of UK sanctions \u2013 freezing over \u00a318bn of Russian assets to stop Putin funding his war machine.
