Kwasi Kwarteng last night revealed he warned\u00a0Liz Truss\u00a0about going too far and too fast with her tax-cutting agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former chancellor said he told then-Prime Minister it was \u2018mad\u2019 to fire him days before she departed No 10 herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his first interview since being sacked last month, Mr Kwarteng also praised\u00a0Rishi Sunak\u00a0as a \u2018very credible\u2019 prime minister but warned him over the impending tax rises in next week\u2019s\u00a0Autumn Statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told TalkTV: \u2018We tried to do too much too quickly. Too much too fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I think the strategic goal was right. But I think we should have had a much more measured approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her drive was 100 per cent the right thing, but I think we needed a better tactical plan to deliver what she wanted.\u2019 He praised Miss Truss\u2019s \u2018dynamism\u2019 and willingness to \u2018hit the ground running\u2019, but said his warnings that the Government needed to take a more \u2018measured approach\u2019 were ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After his disastrous mini-Budget in September, Mr Kwarteng said to Miss Truss that she needed to \u2018slow down\u2019 future reforms but she insisted on carrying on as she only had \u2018two years\u2019 left to drive them through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Kwarteng, who is a friend of Miss Truss, said he learned of his sacking on Twitter. He added: \u2018I got to Downing Street. I went into the Cabinet Room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The Prime Minister was quite sort of distressed and emotional. I said, \u201cYou will have two months if you carry on like this\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged Mr Sunak and his Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to avoid blaming him and Miss Truss for the current dire economic situation. He insisted: \u2018It wasn\u2019t that the national debt was created by Liz Truss\u2019s 44 days in government.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
