It has been estimated that hundreds of the remaining staff opted to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"7cb38f3d-b27e-42c4-abd6-e8b0b2e7361e\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2022\/nov\/16\/elon-musk-gives-twitter-staff-deadline-to-commit-to-being-hardcore\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/8a6f97f741f6416be642205ca73d056ed3d3affc\/0_224_3500_2099\/master\/3500.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=6a02f678c8b2c3b99c2a67ffa7394cad\" alt=\"Elon Musk\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The departures include many engineers responsible for fixing bugs and preventing service outages, raising questions about the stability of the platform amid the loss of employees and prompting hurried debates among managers over who should be asked to return, current and former employees said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an early sign that the number of those declining to sign was greater than anticipated, Musk eased off a return-to-office mandate he had issued a week ago, telling employees on Thursday they would be allowed to work remotely if their managers asserted they were making \u201can excellent contribution\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twitter later announced via email that it would close \u201cour office buildings\u201d and disable employee badge access until Monday, the New York Times reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: Twitter just alerted employees that effective immediately, all office buildings are temporarily closed and badge access is suspended. Website DownDetector reported a significant uptick in user reports of issues on the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf it does break, there is no one left to fix things in many areas,\u201d the person said, who declined to be named for fear of retribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news prompted an outpouring of grief on the platform, and prompted many users to link to their accounts on Instagram or Mastodon as an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted she could be found on Instagram or on email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: Twitter just alerted employees that effective immediately, all office buildings are temporarily closed and badge access is suspended.
