{"id":27751,"date":"2022-11-28T05:43:45","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T05:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=27751"},"modified":"2022-11-28T05:43:47","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T05:43:47","slug":"keir-starmer-rejects-the-idea-of-free-travel-between-the-uk-and-the-eu-returning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2022\/11\/28\/keir-starmer-rejects-the-idea-of-free-travel-between-the-uk-and-the-eu-returning\/","title":{"rendered":"Keir Starmer rejects the idea of free travel between the UK and the EU returning."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keir Starmer has ruled out bringing back free movement of people between Britain and the EU, saying it would be a \u201cred line\u201d for Labour if it gets into power \u2013 despite supporting the policy just three years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Labour leader said free movement \u201cwon\u2019t come back\u201d if he becomes prime minister as Brexit has already happened and \u201cripping up\u201d the deal would lead to years more wrangling with Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, his decision to rule out a return to open borders with other European states if Labour gets into government will disappoint some in his own party who believe EU immigration should be welcomed as a cultural and economic benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starmer also ruled out a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2022\/nov\/20\/brexit-who-wants-a-swiss-style-eu-deal-and-what-would-it-look-like\">\u201cSwiss-style\u201d deal<\/a>with the EU, which would allow access to the single market but require more generous immigration rules, after reports the government was considering such an arrangement prompted frantic denials from No 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11473087\/Sir-Keir-Starmer-insists-wont-derail-Brexit-rules-Switzerland-style-deal.html\">told the Mail on Sunday<\/a>: \u201cA Swiss deal simply wouldn\u2019t work for Britain. We\u2019ll have a stronger trading relationship and we\u2019ll reduce red tape for British business \u2013 but freedom of movement is a red line for me. It was part of the deal of being in the EU but since we left I\u2019ve been clear it won\u2019t come back under my government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added: \u201cRipping up the Brexit deal would lead to years more wrangling and arguing, when we should be facing the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in January 2020 when he was standing to become Labour leader, Starmer indicated he would bring back free movement if he made it to No 10,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2020\/jan\/31\/keir-starmer-labour-should-argue-for-return-of-free-movement-brexit\">saying<\/a>: \u201cI want families to be able to live together, whether that\u2019s in Europe or here \u2026 We have to make the case for freedom of movement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His spokesperson said last week: \u201cHe said he would support freedom of movement whilst the negotiations were going on. Clearly we have now left the EU, so that matter is resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lisa Nandy, the shadow levelling up secretary, claimed Labour had not changed its position because it had always argued that freedom of movement could work only if it was aligned to investment in skills and opportunities for young people in Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She told Sky News on Sunday: \u201cI don\u2019t see any route to do it. That\u2019s the honest truth. I served as shadow foreign secretary for two years and there was no appetite across the European Union for reopening negotiations with the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s much of an appetite in this country, either. We\u2019ve divided amongst ourselves for nearly a decade now on a whole succession of issues and this country\u2019s got to move forwards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nandy called for a \u201csensible\u201d immigration approach that would invest in young people in Britain \u201cfirst and foremost\u201d to fill labour shortages, while recognising that immigration had a \u201csignificant contribution\u201d to make if there were short-term gaps in the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need a serious plan to fill our labour shortages and invest in young people here in Britain, not these back-of-a-fag-packet policies that unravel as soon as they\u2019re announced,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">written by Pippa Crerar<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Keir Starmer has ruled out bringing back free movement of people between Britain and the EU, saying it would be a \u201cred line\u201d for Labour if it gets into power \u2013 despite supporting the policy just three years ago.
