Antoine has done what I think is the greatest work in his entire career \u2026 the people on this team have done some of the best work of their entire careers, and my deepest hope is that my actions don\u2019t penalize my team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo at this point, that\u2019s what I\u2019m working for. That\u2019s what I\u2019m hoping for. The shocking images were published around the world in 1863, fuelling the abolitionist movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film\u2019s release was delayed in May, partly due to concerns about the aftermath of Smith\u2019s actions at the Academy Awards. It will be released in US theatres this week before it streams on Apple TV+ from 9 December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith hit Rock on stage at the 2022 Academy Awards after the comedian made a joke about his wife\u2019s baldness, in an attack that shocked millions watching around the world. Later that night Smith won the best actor Oscar for his role in King Richard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"ca4c5fe3-913f-4eec-8f21-b70fb58468ad\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2022\/oct\/03\/will-smith-oscars-emancipation-movie-apple\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/788da2c33caf83c69b9b0e8a188009e08d4ac5e1\/341_0_1425_856\/master\/1425.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=b359219af22aaf38483aa68c24315683\" alt=\"Will Smith in Emancipation\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2022\/oct\/03\/will-smith-oscars-emancipation-movie-apple\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Vanity Fair in November, Fuqua said there had been no conversations \u201cabout the movie not coming out\u201d but that Apple, which is releasing the film, had been \u201cvery careful\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy conversation was always, \u2018Isn\u2019t 400 years of slavery, of brutality, more important than one bad moment?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cWe were in Hollywood, and there\u2019s been some really ugly things that have taken place, and we\u2019ve seen a lot of people get awards that have done some really nasty things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo I think Apple considered all those things and we discussed a lot of those things. Then a decision was made by the people in charge of distribution and the money at Apple \u2013 and I\u2019m grateful.
