Pep Guardiola praised the \u201cgrumpy\u201d Kevin De Bruyne but said Kalvin Phillips\u2019s post-World Cup condition ruled him out of\u00a0Manchester City\u2019s Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Bruyne created Erling Haaland\u2019s opener and Nathan Ak\u00e9\u2019s winner yet Guardiola stated that Phillips had arrived unfit following a break after participating at Qatar 2022 with England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Phillips\u2019s fellow England squad members at the World Cup, John Stones, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish, were all introduced as replacements against\u00a0Liverpool, and another, Kyle Walker, was an unused substitute, the holding midfielder was absent. Guardiola said: \u201cHe\u2019s not fit \u2013 he did not arrive in the best condition to train.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riyad Mahrez completed the scoring for City, with F\u00e1bio Carvalho and Mo Salah scoring consolations for the visitors. Guardiola, speaking before City were drawn against Southampton in January\u2019s quarter-final, had praise for Rico Lewis, his 18-year-old right-back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
