{"id":29018,"date":"2023-01-06T10:06:20","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T10:06:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=29018"},"modified":"2023-01-06T10:06:22","modified_gmt":"2023-01-06T10:06:22","slug":"turkiye-not-turkey-us-diplomats-agree-to-spelling-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/01\/06\/turkiye-not-turkey-us-diplomats-agree-to-spelling-change\/","title":{"rendered":"T\u00fcrkiye, not Turkey: US diplomats agree to spelling change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US state department has said it will largely stop writing the word Turkey and instead call the country T\u00fcrkiye, agreeing to a request by the Turkish government, which resents the inadvertent association with poultry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement announcing measures to disrupt financiers of the Islamic State group, the state department wrote of joint action between \u201cthe United States and T\u00fcrkiye\u201d, written with an umlaut over the u.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Turkish embassy did request that we use this spelling in our communications,\u201d state department spokesman Ned Price said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"c2d011e7-2d00-4a6e-9e42-b0f3a737200c\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/03\/turkey-changes-name-to-turkiye-as-other-name-is-for-the-birds\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/8a7e089f8e3a38a27c84e996afd4d9cf8613bc21\/0_66_2000_1200\/master\/2000.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=c2529cc42e473a46a7b58a7f3bbc0be1\" alt=\"Turkish diplomat Ayse Inanc behind the new T\u00fcrkiye nameplate at the United Nations.\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/03\/turkey-changes-name-to-turkiye-as-other-name-is-for-the-birds\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe department will use the spelling that you saw today in most of our formal diplomatic and bilateral contexts, including in public communications,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he said \u201cTurkey\u201d was not forbidden when \u201cin furtherance of broader public understanding\u201d as it is \u201cmore widely understood by the American public\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon has been writing T\u00fcrkiye since an August statement on a call between the Nato allies\u2019 defense chiefs, and the state department has occasionally used the spelling on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan in 2021 ordered the consistent use of T\u00fcrkiye in languages that use Latin script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turks have long been upset by cartoons and other references that associate their country\u2019s name in English with the bird \u2013 believed to be so named because the British thought the species, indigenous to North America, came from the east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a recent article, Turkish public broadcaster TRT World noted that a \u201cturkey\u201d can also be slang for a \u201cstupid or silly person\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cType \u2018Turkey\u2019 into Google, and you will get a muddled set of images, articles and dictionary definitions that conflate the country with Meleagris \u2013 otherwise known as the turkey, a large bird native to North America \u2013 which is famous for being served on Christmas menus or Thanksgiving dinners,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other English-speaking countries, the embassy websites in Ankara of Australia, Canada, India and New Zealand write T\u00fcrkiye, while the British, Irish and South African embassies use Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US embassy website as of Thursday was inconsistent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US state department has said it will largely stop writing the word Turkey and instead call the country T\u00fcrkiye, agreeing to a request by the Turkish government, which resents the inadvertent association with poultry.
