Today, we are making history with the completion of the historic rail line, which is the first phase of the Blue Line,\u201d Lagos State Governor, Sanwo-Olu told media representatives during the test ride aboard the electric-powered rail infrastructure earlier in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lagos\u2019 transport master plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The governor revived the project as part of the state\u2019s development agenda. The Blue Line is one of six rail lines and one monorail, 14 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors, over 20 water routes, and a number of major new roads that are part of a strategic transport master plan developed by the Bola Tinubu administration in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction work for the Blue Line rail project began in 2010. However, funding issues and neglect by successive administrations stalled the delivery of the project, which is now being financed solely by the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"672\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/01\/84DE78D6-042B-4215-9B3E-A07CA0B91D6E-1024x672.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29084\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/01\/84DE78D6-042B-4215-9B3E-A07CA0B91D6E-1024x672.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/01\/84DE78D6-042B-4215-9B3E-A07CA0B91D6E-300x197.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/01\/84DE78D6-042B-4215-9B3E-A07CA0B91D6E-768x504.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/01\/84DE78D6-042B-4215-9B3E-A07CA0B91D6E-750x492.jpeg 750w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/01\/84DE78D6-042B-4215-9B3E-A07CA0B91D6E.jpeg 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the governor, passenger operations will commence once the line has been fully tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The construction of an Independent Power Project (IPP) is already underway to ensure that the rail system runs on its own power grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) was charged with overseeing the construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPassengers will use the state\u2019s unified electronic payment system known as Cowry Card, currently being used for BRT and regulated ferry services,\u201d said Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of LAMATA, as regards train fares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She described the completion of the rail infrastructure as \u201cfantastic,\u201d adding that the development marked\u00a0a new chapter for Lagos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The state government said construction of the second phase of the Blue Line rail project, running from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko\u2014both on the Lagos Mainland\u2014will commence in the first quarter of 2023 after official approval of the first phase for passenger operations in January.
