Ukraine was taking \u201can order of magnitude less\u201d in fighting where \u201cseveral thousand\u201d shells a day have been fired by both sides, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>China\u2019s President Xi Jinping is to visit Russia next week in an apparent show of support for Vladimir Putin<\/strong>. During the visit, scheduled for 20-22 March, the two leaders would sign \u201cimportant\u201d bilateral documents and discuss issues of further development of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction between Moscow and Beijing<strong>,<\/strong> the Chinese foreign ministry has said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The US has deep concerns that China could try to position itself as a peacemaker in the war in Ukraine by promoting a ceasefire, <\/strong>the White House has said. A ceasefire in Ukraine would \u201cin effect recognise Russia\u2019s gains and its attempt to conquer its neighbour\u2019s territory by force, allowing Russian troops to continue to occupy sovereign Ukrainian territory\u201d, said the White House national security spokesperson, John Kirby.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan said Turkey would start the process of ratifying Finland\u2019s Nato membership bid<\/strong> in parliament after Helsinki took \u201cauthentic and concrete steps\u201d to keep its promises in a trilateral agreement. Photograph: Burhan \u00d6zbilici\/AP<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sweden remained confident it would join Nato, the foreign minister said.<\/strong> Tobias Billstr\u00f6m said separate ratification of Finland and Sweden\u2019s bids by Ankara was \u201ca development that we didn\u2019t want but it\u2019s something that we\u2019re prepared for\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slovakia will donate 13 MiG-29 warplanes to Ukraine<\/strong>, its prime minister has said.Eduard Heger told a news conference his government was \u201con the right side of history\u201d as Slovakia became the second Nato member to announce such a shipment in 24 hours, after a similar move by Poland. The Kremlin said the promised planes were another example of Nato members \u201craising the level of their direct involvement in the conflict\u201d, adding that \u201call this equipment will be subject to destruction\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Talks are in progress on the renewal of an agreement allowing the safe export of grain<\/strong> from Ukraine\u2019s Black Sea ports, the UN\u2019s office in Geneva has said. The Black Sea grain initiative, brokered between Russia and Ukraine by the UN and Turkey last July, is due to expire on Saturday. The UN, Ukraine and Turkey have called for a 120-day rollover of the agreement. Russia has said the deal should be renewed for only 60 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kyiv\u2019s wartime curfew will be reduced by an hour to boost business.<\/strong> The head of Kyiv city administration, Serhiy Popko, said the new curfew period \u2013 starting at midnight instead of 11pm \u2013 would increase the time for public transport and that reducing its duration \u201cshould help reduce social tension, increase production, create new jobs\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Russia\u2019s defence secretary, Sergei Shoigu, has presented state awards to the pilots of the Su-27 planes involved in the drone incident<\/strong> over the Black Sea for \u201cpreventing the violation of the borders of the special operation area by the American MQ-9 Reaper drone\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Moldova\u2019s president has said she sees no danger of war in her countries while Ukraine continues to dig in against Russia. <\/strong>\u201cThe Russian army cannot get here while Ukraine holds out \u2013 and [therefore] protects Moldova,\u201d Maia Sandu told the Moldovan parliament.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Erdo\u011fan beside his Finnish counterpart, Sauli Niinisto, in Ankara on Friday.
