{"id":31159,"date":"2023-04-13T08:03:39","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T08:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=31159"},"modified":"2023-04-13T08:03:41","modified_gmt":"2023-04-13T08:03:41","slug":"why-are-more-men-committing-suicide-than-women-in-ghana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/04\/13\/why-are-more-men-committing-suicide-than-women-in-ghana\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Are More Men Committing Suicide Than Women In Ghana?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthcare experts are stressing a worrying trend stemming from depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A community psychiatry nurse at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has revealed that nearly 70% of suicides in Ghana are committed by men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total number of people in the country who take their lives annually is 1,500, according to Francis Yeboah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healthcare practitioner was speaking on Joy Prime on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think men are twice the number of females that commit suicide every year,\u201d he said on Prime Morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He blamed this development on the Ghanaian societal demands on men and the lack of emotional support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Yeboah explained that many communities \u201cassume men are supposed to behave in a certain way in our lives\u2026 you know in the journey of life a lot of things come together and emotion is no respecter of gender.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/04\/image-1-16.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/04\/image-1-16.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/04\/image-1-16-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/04\/image-1-16-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/04\/image-1-16-750x422.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo when a man is facing a crisis, it\u2019s assumed by the community that you don\u2019t need to cry, you need to be hard on yourself, so when he\u2019s trying to exhibit his emotions, you hear other men questioning his manhood\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome of these things make men suppress their emotions and we don\u2019t create an outlet for these emotions to exit which creates a built-up tension in the man leading to suicidal thoughts,\u201d he disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on the same show, a psychiatrist at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Abigail Harding says among the numerous reasons people commit suicide, divorce and relationship issues are the leading causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Screenshot-150-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Why are more men committing suicide than women in Ghana?\" class=\"wp-image-10032292746\" title=\"Why are more men committing suicide than women in Ghana?\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDivorce and break up are some of the top reasons why we get a lot of people thinking of carrying out suicide\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a lot of emotional investment that goes into relationships and some would even say financial investment that goes into it, when you look at the different factors, someone attached so closely to someone possibly for many years, they\u2019ve invested so much of their lives into them\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt can a toll on their mental well-being and that makes them more likely to have these thoughts and when you combine it with the mental vulnerability they may have, because about 95 percent of people who commit suicide have a mental health condition so when you compound it, it makes it more likely that they will carry out suicide,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Men are twice the number of women that commit suicide annually \u2013 Expert reveals\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UDrqOqHOlrw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
