{"id":32033,"date":"2023-04-23T17:30:34","date_gmt":"2023-04-23T17:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=32033"},"modified":"2023-04-23T17:30:36","modified_gmt":"2023-04-23T17:30:36","slug":"we-should-improve-things-bentil-on-appointment-of-chief-justice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/04\/23\/we-should-improve-things-bentil-on-appointment-of-chief-justice\/","title":{"rendered":"We Should Improve Things \u2013 Bentil On Appointment Of Chief Justice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process for appointing a Chief Justice in Ghana should be improved, private legal practitioner\u00a0 Kofi Bentil has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He agreed with a suggestion by Founding President of policy think tank, Imani Africa, Franklin Cudjoe that Ghana must emulate the practice in Kenya in the appointment of a Chief Justice<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Cudjoe had indicated that in Kenya, the candidates are interviewed live on television by the Judicial Service Commission for the whole world to observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successful candidate is then presented to Parliament for vetting and subsequently the President appoints the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in Ghana, the president nominates the person for Parliamentary vetting and subsequently, approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 24,&nbsp; Ghana\u2019s Justice Anin Yeboah will be retiring&nbsp;upon attaining the age of 70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Nana Addo&nbsp; Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to nominate another person for&nbsp; vetting and Parliamentary approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commenting on this on Facebook,\u00a0 Mr Franklin Cudjoe said \u201cthe Kenyan Judicial Service Commission conducts live interviews on TV in search of a new Chief Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe successful candidate is then presented to Parliament for vetting and subsequent appointment by the President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe should do same in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reacting to this comment, Mr Bentil who is also Vice President of Imani Africa said \u201cSo it\u2019s not a strange animal.
