{"id":35399,"date":"2023-06-27T08:13:02","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T08:13:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=35399"},"modified":"2023-06-27T08:13:13","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T08:13:13","slug":"assin-north-dafeamekpor-slams-igp-over-directive-for-bodyguards-of-mps-to-surrender-weapons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/06\/27\/assin-north-dafeamekpor-slams-igp-over-directive-for-bodyguards-of-mps-to-surrender-weapons\/","title":{"rendered":"Assin North: Dafeamekpor slams IGP over directive for bodyguards of MPs to surrender weapons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has criticized a directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to have all police bodyguards of MPs surrender their weapons to the nearest police station in Assin North ahead of the by-election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IGP, George Akuffo Dampare, said the directive was one sure way of ensuring a peaceful election on Tuesday, June 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, speaking to journalists in Assin North, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/06\/23\/ndc-accuses-npp-of-spraying-cash-in-assin-north\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"NDC accuses NPP of spraying cash in Assin North\">Dafeamekpor <\/a>said the IGP had no right to give such a directive, as it was unconstitutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBodyguards attached to MPs are part of their conditions of service. The IGP has no power to vary the conditions of service of a sitting MP in the same way he has no power to vary the conditions of service of a superior court judge in this republic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo for him to issue a statement and say that Police bodyguards of MPs should surrender their weapons to the nearest Police Station is unlawful and unconstitutional,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dafeamekpor said the directive was an attempt to intimidate and harass MPs, and he called on the <a href=\"http:\/\/citi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"IGP\">IGP<\/a> to withdraw it immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The directive by the IGP has been met with mixed reactions.
