Meta\u2019s answer to Twitter, a new app called Threads, will launch on Thursday, just as users of the platform owned by\u00a0Elon Musk seek out alternatives in droves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Threads app, which is linked to Instagram, appeared in the\u00a0Apple app store\u00a0on Tuesday ahead of Thursday\u2019s launch. Meta has launched\u00a0 a countdown <\/a>website\u00a0for the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A preview of the \u201ctext-based conversation\u201d app says Threads will be a place \u201cwhere communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what\u2019ll be trending tomorrow\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhatever it is you\u2019re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things \u2013 or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world,\u201d the promotional text says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Screenshots suggest people will be able to use their\u00a0Instagram\u00a0handle to log in to Threads and follow their existing contacts. The app appears to share a similar user interface to Twitter, with similar features including reposting, liking and allowing users to limit who can reply to posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Threads is aptly named for a Twitter rival, but it was originally the\u00a0name of a 2019 app\u00a0Meta launched to compete with the youth-focused messaging app Snapchat. The product was later abandoned but Meta retained the branding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spokesperson for\u00a0Meta\u00a0said the company had no comment on the planned launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta will join a growing field of platforms, including BlueSky and Mastodon, competing to replace\u00a0Twitter\u00a0since Musk took over late last year and the site became more difficult for its estimated 250 million users to access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week, Twitter began requiring users to\u00a0log in to view the site\u00a0\u2013 previously, people without Twitter profiles could view tweets. It then imposed a limit on the vast majority of users who do not pay for the platform, restricting unverified accounts to viewing 600 tweets a day, later upped to 1,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, the company announced it would make its list-based Tweetdeck product \u2013 used mostly by businesses and news organisations \u2013 accessible\u00a0only to users paying for Twitter Blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musk\u2019s moderation decisions, including lifting bans on far-right accounts, and the site\u2019s increasing instability has been a turn-off for advertisers, who have paused or reduced spending in the past few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BlueSky had to momentarily pause new sign-ups \u2013 currently only available by invitation \u2013 to cope with demand after the rate limit change was implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta\u2019s chief product officer, Chris Cox, said during a company-wide meeting there had been demand for a Twitter alternative \u201cfrom creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run\u201d,\u00a0according to The Verge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One factor that may give users pause before signing up to Meta\u2019s Twitter replacement is privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack Dorsey, Twitter\u2019s co-founder who is currently working on BlueSky,\u00a0tweeted\u00a0a screenshot of Threads\u2019 app privacy information, along with the caption \u201cAll your Threads are belong to us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Threads app can collect data related to your health, financial information, contact information, browsing history, location and purchases, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For comparison, BlueSky may link contact information, user content and identifiers. Twitter says it can track users via purchases, contact information, location, contacts and browsing history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
