Meta has launched\u00a0 a countdown<a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/\"> <\/a>website\u00a0for the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"cf8ec096-317b-40da-aa30-fc518fa3c9d3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/jul\/03\/how-twitter-new-changes-will-affect-users-rate-limited-limit-exceeded-restrictions\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/248ea114b81577bdc79bccdd5889e1d6eee5d283\/0_64_3514_2109\/master\/3514.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=c72b8db1e3d40fb8a7cf7ec69ec1a11b\" alt=\"Elon Musk with twitter logo\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A preview of the \u201ctext-based conversation\u201d app says Threads will be a place \u201cwhere communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what\u2019ll be trending tomorrow\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhatever it is you\u2019re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things \u2013 or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world,\u201d the promotional text says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Screenshots suggest people will be able to use their\u00a0Instagram\u00a0handle to log in to Threads and follow their existing contacts. The app appears to share a similar user interface to Twitter, with similar features including reposting, liking and allowing users to limit who can reply to posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Threads is aptly named for a Twitter rival, but it was originally the\u00a0name of a 2019 app\u00a0Meta launched to compete with the youth-focused messaging app Snapchat. It then imposed a limit on the vast majority of users who do not pay for the platform, restricting unverified accounts to viewing 600 tweets a day, later upped to 1,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, the company announced it would make its list-based Tweetdeck product \u2013 used mostly by businesses and news organisations \u2013 accessible\u00a0only to users paying for Twitter Blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Musk\u2019s moderation decisions, including lifting bans on far-right accounts, and the site\u2019s increasing instability has been a turn-off for advertisers, who have paused or reduced spending in the past few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BlueSky had to momentarily pause new sign-ups \u2013 currently only available by invitation \u2013 to cope with demand after the rate limit change was implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"684f3759-cf2b-43e6-a035-2de186de7b6e\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/jul\/01\/twitter-applies-reading-limit-after-users-report-issues-with-platform\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/2e362183d252ae8fc694790d932ab7323e4bbf75\/517_163_4970_2982\/master\/4970.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=0e8d648e2a077ea82a66af38507a2638\" alt=\"Elon Musk\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta\u2019s chief product officer, Chris Cox, said during a company-wide meeting there had been demand for a Twitter alternative \u201cfrom creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run\u201d,\u00a0according to The Verge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One factor that may give users pause before signing up to Meta\u2019s Twitter replacement is privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jack Dorsey, Twitter\u2019s co-founder who is currently working on BlueSky,\u00a0tweeted\u00a0a screenshot of Threads\u2019 app privacy information, along with the caption \u201cAll your Threads are belong to us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Threads app can collect data related to your health, financial information, contact information, browsing history, location and purchases, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For comparison, BlueSky may link contact information, user content and identifiers. Twitter says it can track users via purchases, contact information, location, contacts and browsing history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twitter no longer has a press department.
