{"id":36909,"date":"2023-08-17T12:19:41","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T12:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=36909"},"modified":"2023-08-17T12:19:42","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T12:19:42","slug":"sweden-raises-terrorist-threat-level-after-quran-burnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/08\/17\/sweden-raises-terrorist-threat-level-after-quran-burnings\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweden raises terrorist threat level after Qur\u2019an burnings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweden has raised its terrorist threat level to the second highest number possible, amid heightened security fears following\u00a0a string of Qur\u2019an burningsthat have caused outrage around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raising the threat level from three, meaning \u201cheightened threat\u201d, to four, \u201chigh threat\u201d on the five-point scale, the Swedish security service (S\u00e4po) said that in recent months\u00a0Sweden has shifted from a \u201clegitimate\u201d to a \u201cprioritised\u201d target for acts of terror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the first time since 2016 that the country has changed its threat level to four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making the announcement on Thursday in Stockholm,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Charlotte von Essen, director general of S\u00e4po, said that Sweden was becoming an \u201cincreased focus\u201d for Islamic extremists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said the change in terror threat was a strategic and long-term move, not linked to one particular incident. However, she said\u00a0disinformation campaigns painting Sweden as a Islamophobia country had contributed to the increased threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of the National Centre for Terrorist Threat Assessment<strong>,<\/strong>&nbsp;Ahn-Za Hagstr\u00f6m,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>said violations of Islamic scriptures could affect terror threats, inspiring and motivating terror acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Von Essen said: \u201cThe threat posed to Sweden has changed gradually, and the attack threat posed by violent Islamist actors has increased in the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSweden has gone from being considered a legitimate target for terrorist attacks to being considered a prioritised target. In our assessment, this threat will remain for a long time, and I have therefore decided to raise the terrorist threat level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added: \u201cGovernment agencies and other societal actors must continue to take measures to prevent and reduce the threat of terrorist attacks in Sweden, and it is important to create the conditions needed to maintain these efforts over time. By doing this, we make Sweden a safer place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"6af51f48-d1a4-4304-9824-72dc618e1187\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/aug\/03\/muslims-react-quran-burnings-stockholm-sweden\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/37c77fb07579961519882e44886883378f26e1eb\/0_826_3024_1814\/master\/3024.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=a43c102e992e24d01baa3cd56fbf8747\" alt=\"Sisters Iman and Monica Omer stand outside Stockholm mosque.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She told Swedish people to live as normal but that it was important to stay informed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes after the UK changed its travel recommendations on Sunday, with the foreign office warning visitors: \u201cTerrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Sweden. You should maintain a high level of vigilance in public spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security issues have dominated public discussion in recent weeks after the prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, warned that the country\u2019s freedom of expression laws were being exploited by outsiders to spread \u201chateful messages\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The string of Qur\u2019an burning protests, which under Sweden\u2019s exceptionally liberal freedom of expression laws are legal, have prompted a domestic debate about whether there should be limits to such laws among those who consider their actions hate crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has ruled out changing expression of laws but has said it was considering changing public order laws to enable police to stop Qur\u2019an burnings if they posed a national security threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of July, S\u00e4po said it was handling attack threats against \u201cSweden and Swedish interests on an ongoing basis\u201d and that the desecration of holy scriptures could have a \u201cthreat-inducing effect\u201d.
