{"id":36941,"date":"2023-08-21T06:48:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T06:48:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=36941"},"modified":"2026-07-05T17:17:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T17:17:30","slug":"tropical-storm-hilary-brings-flooding-in-mexicolos-angeles-and-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/08\/21\/tropical-storm-hilary-brings-flooding-in-mexicolos-angeles-and-california\/","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Hilary: Brings Flooding in Mexico,Los Angeles and California"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tropical Storm Hilary made landfall in Mexico over the Baja\u00a0California peninsula and reached south-east of San Diego on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hilary is expected to head towards the US south-west until Monday as authorities warn of life-threatening and catastrophic flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite weakening to tropical storm, the storm was still packing winds of 80mph as it approached the south-western US, with \u201ccatastrophic\u201d flooding expected to follow landfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Evacuations were underway in many areas, including Baja\u00a0California and in the mountains and foothills of San Bernardino county, in California. Experts predicted life-threatening floods and landslides, while some desert regions could receive two to three years\u2019 worth of rain in three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople need to take the storm seriously, they need to listen to their local officials, and they need to make sure that they\u2019re not putting themselves in harm\u2019s way as the storm passes through,\u201d Deanne Criswell, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema), told CNN\u2019s State of the Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHurricane Hilary is going to be a serious impact and threat to southern California.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would be the first tropical storm to hit the south of the state in 84 years, extending a summer of extreme weather that experts are trying to the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"8f22daa2-1a78-414d-aee4-7af96bef03ee\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/fdb32593a7dc6b898d3056ef79f782849ef8c149\/0_0_3744_2496\/master\/3744.jpg?width=445&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none\" alt=\"Volunteers and members of the Long Beach fire department fill sandbags at Belmont Shore beach in Long Beach, California, on Sunday.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Volunteers and members of the Long Beach fire department fill sandbags at Belmont Shore beach in Long Beach, California, on Sunday.&nbsp;Photograph: Justin Sullivan\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Weather Service in Los Angeles has announced that a flash flood warning is in place for Los Angeles, Long Beach and Glendale until 7:45pm today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move immediately to higher ground [and] quickly move away from the burn scar area,\u201d the NWS warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Videos posted online showed streets in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Coachella, California, being flooded as cars struggle to navigate the roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Associated Press reports mud spilling on to highways, water overwhelming drainage systems and tree branches falling in places from San Diego to Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Nevada, Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency as the state prepares for Hilary\u2019s downpour and flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, I am declaring a state of emergency due to the imminent impact of Hurricane Hilary across the state. My administration will continue to work diligently with state, federal, tribal, and local partners in preparation and response to this severe weather event,\u201d Lombardo\u00a0said in an announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHurricane Hilary represents a serious threat to our communities, and once again, I implore all Nevadans to prepare for flooding, remain vigilant, and to follow all guidance from state and local emergency officials,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least\u00a0114 people are known to have died in the Hawaii wildfire, the deadliest in modern history, with hundreds more missing. Evacuations were ordered in Washington state, where a blaze was expanding unchecked near the city of Spokane. And officials in Canada warned of a\u00a0 \u201clife or death situation\u201d in British Columbia, where tens of thousands were urged to evacuate ahead of wildfires described as severe and fast-changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the central US is\u00a0breaking heat records with Texas expected to reach triple digit temperatures this week. The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning on Sunday for portions of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska. Heat advisories or watches were also in place in parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and South Dakota, the Associated Press reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing just this increase in the number of severe weather events but not just in the number, but the severity of these events,\u201d Criswell said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned in an update early on Sunday that heavy rainfall from Hilary was about to begin in southern California, which last experienced a tropical storm in 1939, with Nevada, Utah and Arizona also experiencing effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">according to the NHC, intense heavy rainfall associated with Hilary is expected across the south-western United States through early Monday morning, with total rainfall amounts expected to reach 3 to 6in and isolated maximum amounts of 10in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"ef94688c-2522-40f4-8d7c-537bc1c6595d\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/d7594648f1571139a5ff07150a4ff63a57b7dbd2\/0_0_8192_5464\/master\/8192.jpg?width=445&amp;dpr=1&amp;s=none\" alt=\"Residents shovel and fill sandbags from the desert along the side of the road in Indio, California, on Saturday, as the path of Tropical Storm Hilary heads north towards southern California.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Residents shovel and fill sandbags from the desert along the side of the road in Indio, California, on Saturday, as the path of Tropical Storm Hilary heads north towards southern California.Photograph: David Swanson\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe potentially historic amount of landfall is expected to cause flash, urban and arroyo flooding including landslides, mudslides and debris flows,\u201d the NHC morning advisory said.the\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dangerous to locally catastrophic flooding impacts are expected through Monday morning. Gusty winds are expected to spread well inland across the western US.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NHC\u00a0warned that \u201cHilary is moving toward the north near 23 mph (37 km\/h) and the storm is expected to accelerate even more as it moves north-northwestward to northward during the next day or so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaximum sustained winds are near 60 mph (95 km\/h) with higher gusts,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday afternoon, Hilary had maximum sustained winds of 65mph (100km\/h) and was moving northwest at 25mph (41km\/h), the Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NHC also warned that a dangerous storm surge is likely to produce coastal flooding along the western Baja California peninsula of\u00a0Mexico near where the center passes the coast in areas of onshore winds, or east of the center when Hilary makes landfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It added that the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. Large swells generated by Hilary will affect parts of the Baja California peninsula and southern California over the next day or so, with the NHC warning that the swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tornadoes are possible through this evening over south-east California, western Arizona, southern Nevada and far south-west Utah, warned the NHC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Mexico, one person drowned on Saturday in Santa Rosalia, on the eastern coast of Baja California Sur, when a vehicle was swept away in an overflowing stream. Video posted by local officials showed torrents of water coursing through the town\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 300 miles (480km) of the western coast were under a hurricane warning on Sunday, from Punta Abreojos to Cabo San Quintin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NHC was also monitoring give weather systems in the Atlantic with potential to develop into tropical storms. The most westerly, close to the Florida Keys in the Gulf of Mexico, had a 50% chance of forming a storm that could threaten Texas, forecasters said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit southern California on Sunday afternoon, with at least five aftershocks\u00a0detected that were measured between 2 and 4.0 magnitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0Following the earthquake which the National Weather Service has described as \u201cmoderate\u201d, the NWS said that there is currently no tsunami threat for southern California.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Hilary made landfall in Mexico over the Baja\u00a0California peninsula and reached south-east of San Diego on Sunday afternoon.
