{"id":37047,"date":"2023-08-23T06:34:32","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T06:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=37047"},"modified":"2023-08-23T06:34:34","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T06:34:34","slug":"our-meeting-with-niger-coup-leaders-has-been-very-fruitful-general-abdulsalami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/08\/23\/our-meeting-with-niger-coup-leaders-has-been-very-fruitful-general-abdulsalami\/","title":{"rendered":"Our meeting with Niger coup leaders has been very fruitful \u200a\u2014 General Abdulsalami"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abdulsalami believes diplomacy would prevail despite the ECOWAS\u2019 threat to militarily intervene in the country\u2019s crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the former Head of State said he has submitted the report on the outcome of their meeting with military leaders in Niger to <strong>President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his visit to the country, Abdulsalami met with the ousted President of Niger, <strong>Mohamed Bazoum,<\/strong> and the coup plotters led by <strong>General Abdouramane Tian<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar (left) with an ECOWAS representative at the state house to brief President Bola Tinubu on visit to the military junta in Niger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"790\" height=\"593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/08\/image-2-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/08\/image-2-jpg.webp 790w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/08\/image-2-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/08\/image-2-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/pub\/2023\/08\/image-2-750x563.webp 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said, <em>\u201cAs you are aware, the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government have made me an envoy to Niger Republic and we were there over the weekend to see the military people and discussed finding a way out of the lacuna we find ourselves.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cSo, that\u2019s why I\u2019m here this afternoon, together with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, to give a report back to Mr. President on our discussions in Niger. I must say that our visit to Niger has been very fruitful and that it has opened an avenue to start talking and hopefully, we\u2019ll get somewhere.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abdulsalami said he has delivered the terms of the junta to the ECOWAS, adding that communication has commenced between the two parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>We\u2019ve started talking, they have made their own points and then I made my report to the Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of State and President. He will now consult with his colleagues and then we\u2019ll get somewhere hopefully,<\/em>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former Head of State expressed hope that military action would be avoided by both parties, saying nobody wants to go to war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>Hopefully diplomacy will see the better of this. Nobody wants to go to war, it doesn\u2019t pay anybody, but then again, our leaders have said if all fails and I don\u2019t think all will fail, we\u2019ll get somewhere we\u2019ll get out of this mess<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, last Saturday, the leader of the Niger junta in a televised broadcast proposed a three-year power transition plan, but the ECOWAS has rejected the plan, insisting that democracy must be restored in Niger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"page-container \" data-run-module=\"local\/lazyLoad.run\" data-run-module-isrun=\"1\"><div class=\"container-full right-column-300\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"page-wrapper row\"><div id=\"article\" class=\"main-section col-md-9\"><div class=\"articleBox \"><div data-article-id=\"dd2lm1r\"><div class=\"container-wrapper \"><section class=\"ring-grid-box-container ring-grid-container container \"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"ring-grid-left-box col-sm-12 col-md-12 col-lg-12\"><div class=\"article-content \" id=\"article-content-body\"><div class=\"article-body-text\"><div class=\"ringCommonDetail ringBlockType-heading \"><h2 class=\"heading-h2 replaced-h1\" id=\"nav-ring-1\"><h2 class=\"heading-h2 replaced-h1\" id=\"nav-ring-1\"><\/h2><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abdulsalami believes diplomacy would prevail despite the ECOWAS\u2019 threat to militarily intervene in the country\u2019s crisis.
