A transgender woman won election to a seat on\u00a0Nashville\u2019s city council, becoming the first openly transgender person to be voted into political office in Tennessee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olivia Hill, 57, secured one of the four open at-large seats on the metro council of\u00a0Nashville, a politically liberal city in an overwhelmingly conservative state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her triumph made her the first transgender woman to be elected in Tennessee,\u00a0according to the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, an advocacy group aiming to get LGBTQ+ people into public office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hill was elected Thursday, winning 12.9% of the vote, NBC news reported,monitored by Nsemgh.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was born and raised in Nashville,\u00a0according to her campaign website, and is a military veteran, having served in the US navy\u2019s engineer division for 10 years. Overall, she has been an engineer for 36 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hill previously worked at the Vanderbilt University power plant, retiring in December 2021,\u00a0the Tennessean <\/a>reported. She sued the university in September 2021 after experiencing intense workplace discrimination; the two parties reached an out-of-court settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hill is a public speaker and advocate for women\u2019s and LGBTQ+ rights, and she has served on the board of directors for the Tennessee Pride Chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy expertise is fixing things, and while my focus is repairing Nashville\u2019s outdated infrastructure, I also want to ensure that our city is represented with true diversity in a state where the ruling party thinks I should head to the closet,\u201d Hill said in a media release on Thursday following her win, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women now make up the majority of Nashville\u2019s metro council, the AP reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annise Parker, the president and CEO of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, applauded Hill\u2019s victory. Parker noted that Hill\u2019s historic election comes as Tennessee\u2019s state legislature passes laws discriminating against transgender communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNashville voters clearly reject the hateful rhetoric that has grown louder in Tennessee politics lately,\u201d Parker said\u00a0i<\/a>n a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOlivia\u2019s victory proves that transgender people belong everywhere decisions about them are being made, including local office.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tennessee\u2019s numerous anti-LGBTQ+ laws include\u00a0bans on drag shows\u00a0and\u00a0gender-affirming care for minors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
