{"id":38774,"date":"2023-10-12T15:06:50","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T15:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=38774"},"modified":"2023-10-12T15:06:53","modified_gmt":"2023-10-12T15:06:53","slug":"capital-banks-ato-essien-sentenced-to-15-years-in-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2023\/10\/12\/capital-banks-ato-essien-sentenced-to-15-years-in-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Capital Bank\u2019s Ato Essien sentenced to 15 years in prison"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founder of defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by an Accra High Court today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Essien was convicted of stealing over GH\u00a290m of Bank of Ghana\u2019s liquidity support to the now-defunct financial institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This comes after his inability to fully pay the said amount back to the State after agreeing to do so&nbsp;despite being afforded the opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He earlier paid \u00a230 million upfront in December 2022 and was required to pay \u00a220 million as the first installment of the \u00a260 million outstanding amount by April 28, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was in the criminal case filed against him following the collapse of the bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More soon&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Founder of defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by an Accra High Court today.
