However, society has remained largely conservative and there was resistance to opening up marriage to same-sex couples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Indian government had opposed the case, calling the arguments for equality \u201curban elitist views\u201d and stating that marriages were not \u201ccomparable with the Indian family unit concept of a husband, a wife and children\u201d.
