The former Australian prime minister\u00a0Scott Morrison\u00a0has told reporters in Israel the world should not get \u201csuckered into\u201d supporting a ceasefire in Gaza, calling it a \u201cplay from Hamas\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Liberal party leader\u00a0touched down in Israel on Sunday, joined by former UK prime minister Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two reportedly met with the Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, on Sunday before touring southern\u00a0Israel\u00a0amid its conflict against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in the besieged strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Morrison told reporters there was a \u201cwillingness\u201d to ensure humanitarian support in his discussions with Israeli officials but said he did not support a ceasefire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cDo you provide a pause and a ceasefire to allow\u00a0Hamas\u00a0to regroup? To get themselves in a position to resist even further?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI mean \u2026 this is the play from Hamas and we\u2019ve got to be careful not to be suckered into it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comments follow\u00a0a passionate display in the Senate after the Greens\u2019 deputy leader, Mehreen Faruqi, staged a boycott of question time with 10 of her fellow senators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faruqi, who wore a traditional Palestinian keffiyeh, told parliament Labor\u2019s \u201cweasel words are not going to stop war crimes\u201d and shouted \u201cfree, free Palestine\u201d in parliament with her fist raised before the Greens senators left the chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou are watching the massacre of thousands of Palestinians by Israel, and you are not condemning Israel, you refuse to call for an immediate ceasefire,\u201d she told the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senior Labor government minister Don Farrell told the Senate he \u201ccompletely rejects\u201d Faruqi\u2019s allegations, describing the Israeli military action as the \u201cconsequences\u201d of the \u201cunjustified, illegal\u201d Hamas attacks. He said the Australian government had \u201caffirmed Israel\u2019s right to defend itself after that horrific attack\u201d, but noted the foreign minister had also said it \u201cmattered\u201d how\u00a0Israel exercises its right to self-defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia has continued to call for a humanitarian pause to allow food, water and medicine to reach Palestinians in the\u00a0Gaza\u00a0Strip, who remain trapped within the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farrell, in his response to a question from Faruqi, sidestepped committing to supporting a United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia\u00a0abstained at a UN general assembly votein October urging an \u201cimmediate, durable and sustainable humanitarian truce\u201d. Australian officials later said they agreed with the position but abstained because the resolution did not name Hamas as perpetrator of the 7 October attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shadow home affairs minister, James Paterson, also argued against a ceasefire on Monday morning, saying Israel\u2019s removal of Hamas was a \u201clegitimate military objective\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA ceasefire would just allow Hamas to regroup. It would allow them to continue to hold more than 200 hostages and it would allow them to again prepare for another attack on Israel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving said that, it is, of course, important for Israel and the IDF [Israel Defence Forces] to do what they can to minimise civilian casualties, and that is what they have done in previous conflicts and that\u2019s what we expect them to do in this conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
