{"id":41680,"date":"2024-02-24T06:39:14","date_gmt":"2024-02-24T06:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/?p=41680"},"modified":"2026-07-08T02:22:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T02:22:15","slug":"trump-voices-strong-support-for-ivf-treatments-after-alabama-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nsemgh.com\/2024\/02\/24\/trump-voices-strong-support-for-ivf-treatments-after-alabama-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump voices \u2018strong support\u2019 for IVF treatments after Alabama ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donald Trump has voiced \u201cstrong support\u201d for IVF treatments, days after a ruling by the\u00a0Alabamasupreme court threw into question the legal status of human embryos and several providers in the state cut off access to the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former US president said that under his leadership, the Republican party \u201cwill always support the creation of strong, thriving, healthy American families\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like\u00a0IVF\u00a0in every State in America,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separately, Kari Lake, the Republican candidate for Senate from Arizona, said she backed expanded access to the fertility treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne in six Americans struggle with fertility issues,\u201d\u00a0Lake said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the Senate, I will advocate for increased access to fertility treatment for women struggling to get pregnant,\u201d she said. \u201cIVF is extremely important for helping countless families experience the joy of parenthood. I oppose restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans have been struggling to find a unified response to the decision this week after losing multiple state elections after the fall of Roe v Wade. On Thursday, the Republican US senator\u00a0Tommy<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2023\/nov\/07\/tommy-tuberville-trump-military-holds\"> <\/a>Tuberville\u00a0of Alabama seemingly struggled to grasp the contradictory situation women have been placed in after his state\u2019s supreme court ruled that frozen embryos are \u201cchildren\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"858d48f7-78a8-4953-9453-80ec7c566ebe\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2024\/feb\/23\/fertility-doctors-reaction-alabama-embryo-ruling\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/64b30920cc666ceec964eacce176313764e7495c\/0_203_5292_3176\/master\/5292.jpg?width=460&amp;quality=85&amp;auto=format&amp;fit=max&amp;s=c5fbdcbab3ebc2fca6f983c8e6592cb8\" alt=\"FILE - In this Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018 photo, containers holding frozen embryos and sperm are stored in liquid nitrogen at a fertility clinic in Fort Myers, Fla. (AP Photo\/Lynne Sladky, File)\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked at a conservative conference what he would say to women currently denied the fertility treatment, the former college football coach\u00a0replied: \u201cYeah, I was all for it. We need to have more kids, we need to have an opportunity to do that, and I thought this was the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then when he was pressed on whether the ruling would negatively affect people who are trying to have conceive, Tuberville said: \u201cWell, that\u2019s, that\u2019s for another conversation. I think the big thing is right now, you protect \u2013 you go back to the situation and try to work it out to where it\u2019s best for everybody. I mean, that\u2019s what \u2013 that\u2019s what the whole abortion issue is about.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result of the ruling in question in Alabama,\u00a0at least three IVF providers\u00a0in the state have suspended services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s a hard one,\u201d Tuberville said when asked about IVF availability in Alabama. \u201cIt really is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuberville said: \u201cI\u2019d have to look at what they\u2019re agreeing to and not agreeing to. I haven\u2019t seen that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he said that it was \u201cunfortunate\u201d if the women would be denied the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuberville\u2019s spokesperson Hannah Eddins later sought to clarify\u00a0the senator\u2019s remarks, saying he had been \u201cemphasizing his support for life at all stages\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn addition to being pro-life and believing life begins at conception, Senator Tuberville is also pro-family,\u201d Eddins said. \u201cHe believes strong families are instrumental to our country\u2019s success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Alabama court\u2019s decision, released earlier this week, came in response to a lawsuit by a group of IVF patients whose frozen embryos were destroyed in December 2020 when a patient removed the embryos from a cryogenic storage unit and dropped them on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the ruling, Republican anti-abortion politicians are now in a bind between opposing abortion and supporting treatments that promote conception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement on Friday, Joe Biden scoffed at Trump\u2019s response to the Alabama ruling. \u201cAmerican women couldn\u2019t care less what Donald Trump posts on Truth Social, they care that they can\u2019t access fertility treatment because of him.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Donald Trump has voiced \u201cstrong support\u201d for IVF treatments, days after a ruling by the\u00a0Alabamasupreme court threw into question the legal status of human embryos and several providers in the state cut off access to the procedure.
